The New FTC Business Opportunity Rule -

What You Need To Know.

Everyone knows that public policy and legal jargon can but you a sleep faster then counting sheep, but the new FTC business opportunity rule is poised to flip the industry on its head, so you might want to check this out.

In March, 2012, the Federal Trade Commission enacted an amendment to the FTC Business Opportunity Rule allowing individuals who are considering purchasing a business opportunity (“bizopp”) access to more information regarding the business. Due to unscrupulous sellers of fake businesses scamming millions of people each year with promises of overnight wealth, the government now requires sellers offering immediately viable businesses for sale to disclose much more data than previously needed by law.

How the new FTC Business Opportunity Rule protects you..

The FTC Business Opportunity Rule covers arrangements in which the seller of a “bizopp” who actively solicits potential clients and makes specific claims about the business being lucrative and workable must do three things or be in violation of the The FTC Business Opportunity Rule:

Provide the buyer with a disclosure document seven days before he or she signs any contracts or pays any money to the seller.

If earnings claims are communicated to the buyer, the seller must give the buyer another document entitled “EARNINGS CLAIM STATEMENT REQUIRED BY LAW”.

Sellers are legally obligated to refrain from deceptive business practices and/or misleading advertisement claims.

Any type of “work at home” business such as envelope stuffing, assembling crafts or other businesses that involve the seller buying items from the buyer is covered by the FTC Business Opportunity Rule. Sellers who say they will assist buyers in establishing or operating a business by setting up accounts, clients and locations from where the buyer can advertise services and/or products are also covered by the FTC Business Opportunity Rule.

Specifics of the disclosure document include:

Information providing the name, address and contact numbers of the company

Name of the person selling the business and date on which the document was delivered to the buyer

The new FTC Business Opportunity Rule provides you with better information.

Information about whether you, the company or personnel associated with the company have been involved in criminal or civil actions concerning fraud, misrepresentation, securities law violations and other deceptive actions that violate the  FTC Business Opportunity Rule.

Inform the buyer of any refund or cancellation policies

Inform the buyer of potential income earned by owning the business

List of at least 10 references who have previously purchased “bizopps” from the seller

The new FTC Business Opportunity Rule is meant to prevent consumers from being deceived by fraudulent business methods practiced by many internet scam artists. If you think you have been the victim of such unfair practices, you can file a complaint by calling the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357.

Any expert will agree that the new FTC business opportunity rule is going to take its toll on a lot of business opportunities that are not compliant. But it’s important to note that the new rule will help fix the reputation that hurt the business opportunity industry in recent years. I for one welcome the changes that the new FTC business opportunity rule will bring to the table.

Today is the last segment to the Overcoming Obstacles and Learning Anything FAST series, where we’re picking apart my experience with learning how to ski (correctly), and taking those key lessons and then applying them to your business and personal life.

(If you missed Part 1 or Part 2 of this series, you’ll want to go check them out first so you can get caught up on what’s been covered, and have a foundation for this last, critically important component for overcoming obstacles and learning anything fast. Click here for Part 1, and here for Part 2.)

To give credit to my ski instructors, the last big lesson to merit my breakthrough was consistency.

You see, each time I went to work with an instructor, I either hadn’t skied at all that season (it was my first time out), or it was my second and final time for the season.

I mentioned in Part 1 of this series that my first time skiing was 10 years ago. But in between then and the beginning of this season, I had only been out maybe 7 or 8 times…total, over 10 years.

I knew that consistency, and not spending enough time on the slopes to get comfortable and practice was my main setback.

You can’t expect to learn a new skill-set or overcome an obstacle if you don’t put time, focus and consistent effort toward it. It just goes against the laws of life.

And yet, every so often I hear someone saying , “Well, I tried out XYZ for a month, but it didn’t work.”

Seriously?

We all know better than that.

It’s so funny when I think of all the times I’ve taken on a new skill-set –and I’ll use sports as an example. Just because I was athletic my whole life (primarily in playing fast-pitch softball), I would get so impatient and frustrated with a new sport – like when I took on jet skiing, and then skiing, and later on golf. It was like I was a fish out of water.

Yet I expected that because I was athletic, I should be able to just pick it up like it was no big deal.

For those of us who were business owners before we came to the home or online business world…the same mindset is applied sometimes.

We think, “Well, I did the business thing before…so why does this feel so awkward, or why does this feel like it’s taking so long?” You feel like a fish out of water. And sure, if that’s where you came from, of course you’re going to have some skill-sets that you can apply here; but not all of them.

There is a learning curve, just as there is with anything new to us.

And that’s why I’m so passionate about working with individuals and couples who are new to home business and online business…to help them, guide them, and move them through that learning curve more quickly than they could do just trying to figure it out their own.

We all know that if you’re going to get better at ANYTHING, it’s going to take focus, learning from someone who’s already done it, and consistent effort.

Now that, my friends, is a formula for learning any new skill-set or overcoming any obstacle!

Today we continue on with identifying how to make a significant impact on how quickly you learn and overcome obstacles. We’re examining my experience with learning how to ski (correctly) this season and taking those key lessons and applying it to our business and personal lives.

(If you missed the first part of this lesson, click here to check it out…it really lays the foundation for what I’m covering here today in Part 2.)

My 2nd major lesson was how critically important it was that I had a mentor…and to continuing having a mentor. Actually, I had many mentors over the years (hired ski instructors). And all of them were helpful to me at the time.

But the one who really made a difference for me was my mom-in-law. We worked together to figure out what adjustments were needed. She was knowledgeable from skiing for well over 30 years, and that certainly helped.

But even she had certain tips and exercises that didn’t work for me, that worked for her. It took the two of us together putting our heads into what would work for ME.

There’s no way she could know and experience what it was that I was experiencing. She couldn’t do it for me. So I had to use my own mind, feeling things out for myself, and then applying what she and my former instructors had taught me in previous lessons.

It was from that process that I had one of my biggest “Ah-ha”s (epiphanies) yet that made THE difference in my terrible left hand turns just a couple Sunday’s ago.

I figured out that I wasn’t leaning into my left turns. If anything, I was leaning away from them.

It was uncomfortable and even a bit scary when I started working on this new approach…leaning in hard, even over-exaggerating at first, to begin teaching my body to trust this technique. But it made all the difference in my confidence and comfort in my turns.

You might be wondering, “Okay Christine…so how does this “mentor”  lesson apply to our big topic here…which is overcoming obstacles and learning anything fast?”

Anyone who has ever worked with a coach or mentor in their life (at any age), knows that the fastest way to learn is to be guided by someone who has done it before, or even better, is doing it NOW.

That certainly sounds like common sense when we think of learning a new sport.

But what about learning new skill-sets related to work, or starting a new business?

The fact is, it’s just as helpful and important to have a mentor for learning new work-related skill-sets and/or starting a new business.

Let’s face it…it can be easy to get distracted by things that will only slow you down, or hinder you, when you’re doing something new.

Years ago I hired a personal trainer when I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t seeing any progressive difference in my body, when I was working out like a mad woman. He gave me one of the best analogy’s I’ve ever heard…

He told me that the way I was working out, “was like training for a marathon by practicing sprints, hurdles, the 400 meter, and running 10 miles.” As fast as I was putting on muscle (from lifting heavy weights), I was chewing it up with the other types of exercise I was doing at the same time.

He showed me exactly what I needed to do, to get the results I’d been wanting for the past 2 years. I lost 50 pounds in less than 12 months after receiving his mentor-ship and guidance.

(And by the way, this wasn’t one of those “personal trainers” that spent every workout with me, pushing me, and showing me what to do every time I came into the gym. He laid out what I was doing wrong, showed me what I needed to do, and then let me move forward and take action on my own.)

Find a mentor who has been there, done that, and even better, who is doing it now. They can help you get from where you’re at, to where you want to go in a fraction of the time it would take you to figure it out on your own. But just remember…they can’t do it for you

Overcome Your Obstacles And Learn Anything FAST…Lessons From A Ski Bum

Part I

If you’re like me, there’s a good chance that at some time in your life you made a decision to learn how to do something new. And it required learning some new skills. Maybe you’re new to the home business or online business world, or maybe you’re taking on a new sport to bring some newness to your life.

Whatever it may be, I’m going to share a story with you that if you pay close attention, you’ll be able to apply it to this journey you’re on, as you are learning new skill-sets and mindsets. And IF you choose to apply what you learn here today, I promise it will make a significant impact on how quickly you learn and overcome obstacles.

10 years ago I decided I wanted to take up snow skiing. Well actually, I was lovingly nudged by Matthew’s mom.

For my birthday this year, my awesome mom-in-law got me a private lesson for my birthday to get me warmed up and back into the swing of things.

As excited as I was about being “athletic Christine” and taking on a sport I had not mastered…I was nervous. I’ll even admit that I was dreading part of the experience.

It had been 2 years since my feet had been in ski boots…and yet I remembered just how uncomfortable and awkward they could be like it was yesterday.

But onward I went with the instructor to the bunny hill.

My first initial feelings as I came off the lift and navigated my way down the hill (doing my best to not fall on my face) were how painful my boots were already…how was I going to make it through the rest of this day?

I was having a heck of a time turning without feeling incredibly uncomfortable and feeling like at any minute my skis were going to tangle up and trip me.

After just a few runs down the mountain, I was exhausted…stopping over and over to catch my breath and relieve the burning in my legs. (If you’re a skier, you already know that I was leaning back…which was causing the burning and exhaustion.)

My boots were KILLING me. I kept loosening them, but they only hurt my legs and feet more.

You might think after all this pain and discomfort, that I would have decided to, “Forget it,” and never come back to skiing again.

Nope…not me! (I love pain, don’t you?? 

So fast forward to my 4th day of skiing (1 month later…just two Sunday’s ago).

My mom-in-law and I decided we would spend the 1st half of the day working on some exercises and drills, and then the latter half of the day just skiing.

Things started off better as we warmed up on the bunny hill, but once we were at the top of the mountain on the blue intermediate runs, we realized something was wrong.

The drills my mom-in-law were giving me were making things worse. I even tripped myself once, when I was only skiing at a snail’s pace!

After scratching our heads, finally she asked me, “Are you putting your weight on one or both skis?” And I realized most of the time my weight was on just one ski. No wonder I was so exhausted and wasn’t feeling in control.

“Scratch that,” she said…and we spent the rest of the day focusing on my balance.

As I reflected on that day, and the previous weeks of skiing, I realized I learned some pretty profound lessons through my painful, and even sometimes scary experiences up on the mountain.

There are 3 major lessons you can learn from my skiing journey and can apply to your business, and to your life actually…when it comes to learning new skill-sets and overcoming obstacles.

And to keep this short and digestible, I’m going to share just the first one with you today.

The first thing I learned was how important it is to look toward where I wanted to go (which was downhill).

When you look behind you when you’re trying to move forward…it just doesn’t work. You either stop, or fall, or crash into something that you don’t see coming. When you look in a direction other than where you’re wanting to go…you get stuck. And you can’t get back to where you came from without having to climb back up a hill, which is actually much harder than going down the hill.

In my case, I often was either looking down at my skis (to make sure I didn’t trip myself…LOL), or I was looking off to the side. But I wasn’t looking toward where I wanted to go. Because my head wasn’t pointed downhill, my body was resisting going in that direction, which is why my turns were so uncomfortable and hard for me. Once I pointed my head downhill, my upper body followed, and then so did my feet.

Are you beginning to see how you can apply some truths of skiing to your own life?

If you find yourself in the midst of change, or discomfort, or learning a new skill-set, take a moment to reflect:

• Are you looking behind you?
• Are you looking in a direction other than where you are wanting to go (are you being distracted)?
• If you’re feeling resistance, what is one thing you can do today to get yourself moving naturally toward your goals? And if you don’t know, what would you do if you did?
• How can you get your whole mind on board with where you are going?

(By the way, this just reminded me of a fantastic resource for breaking through resistance…the title may be a bit “off,” but trust me, this is a great book for breaking through barriers. It gets ALL parts of your brain on board and moving in the same direction. I really think it should be called “How to Get Anything Fast”, but considering the co-author is Joe Vitale, it’s no surprise it has a “sexier” name: How To Get Lots Of Money For Anything FAST by Stuart Lichtman and Joe Vitale.)

I’m going to stop here, because I want to give you some time to chew on this first BIG lesson. Don’t just be a scholastic learner…be an experiential learner. Tune out of the world for a moment, and take some time to reflect on and apply what you’ve learned here today. That’s when you will see positive change show up in your business and life.

Debt Free Marriage…Is It Really Possible?

Any Expert will agree that having a debt free marriage is harder now than ever in today’s society. However, debt and marriage do not need to go hand and hand. If each partner takes some simple financial steps, it is possible to have a debt free marriage. As financial difficulties is one the main causes of divorce, this obstacle to life together needs to be addressed by both parties involved.

Before tying the knot, it is important to have an open and honest conversation about debt and marriage. For instance, if one partner has a lot of unpaid student loan debt, then the other partner will need to file as an injured spouse in order to receive their full tax return. While this may not lead to a debt free marriage, it is one of the ways debt and marriage can be worked out without calling in the divorce lawyers.

When It Comes To Having A Debt Free Marriage…Honesty Is The Best Policy.

Paying down consumer debt and saving up and paying with cash for what you want is always the best way to have a debt free marriage.

With the new year upon us, the business opportunity industry is poised for the flood of people looking to stake their claim in today’s modern day gold rush.

As they push their way in like the Black Friday shoppers you saw on the news, looking for the best deal on a business, the majority of them will forget that size does matter, and that their potential profit will be affected by this fact.

Size Does Matter…Because It Costs You The Same To Market.

Everyone knows the two most popular opportunities for new business start up’s are MLM or Affiliate Marketing

The reality is that whatever your business is selling your cost to market on Pay Per Click (PPC), Banner, or any paid media will cost you about the same.

So ask yourself this one key question…If it’s going to cost you $1.00 every time someone clicks on your ad…Wouldn’t you rather have your hard work and efforts pay you commissions in the hundreds if not thousands dollars vs. the nickels and dimes paid out from most business opportunities or affiliates?

Having been in home business for well over a decade know, I have found only one industry that will allow you to find that niche where you can become the expert or guru, that commands 10 times more for there efforts…and it’s the direct sales industry.

Because the direct sales industry will actually pay you what you are worth. It pays you for your efforts, it does this and more because size does matter.

Now I can almost hear you brain saying…”I Hate Selling!”

Well the reality is in direct sales…you actually sell less!!!

Sound crazy? We’ll let me explain.

If you want to make $1,000.00 per month with a MLM or Affiliate Business and lets say your commission on a single sale is $ 50.00, you would need to make 20 sales in that month to reach your goal.

Because I am in high demand direct sales company, if I want to make that very same $1,000.00, guess how many sales I have to make per month in my business?

You guessed right….2.

…Who’s really selling more here?

Any expert will agree that your return on investment or the bottom line is a key factor in deciding whether a business model is right for your financial goals, so remember when looking at a business and how much it will pay you, always keep in mind size does matter.

A Christmas Legend – Christine’s Knock You On Your Ass Eggnog

-Christmas 2001 Reno, NV-

So it was our first Christmas to host the family for dinner and to say that Christine was a little nervous was an understatement to say the least.

Absolute perfection was the goal…right down to the napkin rolls and place settings.

Now to really set the stage for this, it’s important to explain a challenge we faced. You see even though we lived in a great house, it was a rental, and as you know, top end appliances are generally not included.

So I was certain that attempting a Christmas dinner with what I liked to refer to as our “Fisher Price Cake Bake Oven” would lead to a group of people quietly sitting around the dinner table, suffering though a dinner that would be the butt of jokes for years to come.

Luckily I was able to talk Christine into buying a precooked meal, in the name of keeping things simple and keeping the stress to a minimum.

NOT SO FAST….No stress at Christmas….No Way!

After sitting down a few days prior to Christmas and putting a plan on paper (that I was sure resembled the battle plans for the invasion of Normandy), the one thing Christine was dead set on was making, was my Dad’s homemade eggnog.

Yes it’s that good!!!

Seriously…this eggnog is pure bliss in a glass. It could take any bad holiday party and turn into the talk of the water cooler for weeks, and all we needed was the recipe.

After a quick call to Dad, over the fax the recipe came, and I had one happy wife. But at the bottom, was a hand written note, “I dropped the brandy down to one cup.”

Now we’ll get back to that in a minute.

Christine’s Grandmother is not a quiet woman, but humble. She did not want others to fuss over her, and she certainly would not make a scene.

She and Grandpa, had come over the hill to spend Christmas with us, along with other members of Christine’s family.

Grandpa and I had to run out for the inevitable Christmas day last minute items, you know…”The I thought You Got Them” items.

So we headed out just as the eggnog was being served, and as we were stepping out the door, joking we said to Grandma, “Just Two Glasses, You Don’t Want To Get Run Over By A Reindeer.”

We returned not more then a hour later, and entered the house to the sound of uncontrollable laughter. We walked up the stairs to see Grandma dancing and laughing like it was going out of style!

Clearly you could see that the eggnog had brought out the Christmas cheer in her, and after helping Grandpa pick his jaw up from the floor, I whispered in Christine’s ear….

“Why Is Grandma drunk?”

“2 glasses of eggnog” she replied

You see Grandma, rarely if ever drank, but even I couldn’t figure this one out, until…

…I helped myself to some eggnog.

WOW….How about some eggnog with my brandy!!!

“This is really strong”, I told Christine, she said, “I know, I only had half a glass and have been mixing it to help the taste.”

As I struggled to keep my eyes from crossing, I began to wonder, did she not add something, so I asked, “Did you follow the recipe?”

“Word for word”…. Then she paused with a sheepish grin as she looked at Grandma.

It hit her, she forgot to cut the brandy back to a cup, and instead used the what recipe called for…1 quart.

How to Overcome the Biggest Obstacle Between Reaching Your True Happiness and Success

In my previous post, “The Positivity Revolution”, we discovered how to breakthrough to the happiness and success you desire, by learning simple and quick scientifically proven techniques.

Of course we all know that even when you know what can make you happier or more successful, but you don’t actually do those things, nothing will change for you. What we’re talking about here is not about a lack of knowledge. You can be provided with information, but information alone won’t transform your life.

You can read gobs of books, on “self-help”, for example, and know a LOT about self-help, ways to improve yourself, your quality of life, etc.; but without taking action, without DOING the things you know to do from those books, you’ll never experience the benefits of putting into action what you learned.

The purpose of this post today is to go from KNOWING what to do — to actually DOING it. And we all know that often when it comes to overcoming large obstacles, something inevitably gets in the way. We’re going to cover that “something” here today.

In the video below, Harvard Psychology Professor Shawn Achor discusses the challenge of “Activation Energy,” and how it is key for us to do the things we actually want to do, to get the results we want.

I’ve included my own thoughts and experiences on this topic that I feel will provide perspective for you in understanding this clearly, however, in my effort to maintain accuracy (since we will be talking a little “science” here), I have also included much of what is shared in the video).

Activation Energy is the energy it takes to start a task. In chemistry, it is referred to as the energy it takes to start a chain reaction. Once you’ve got that energy started, the rest of the formula can continue.

The same is true for us. If you want to start a new chain reaction of change in your life (to become happier, more successful, physically fit, etc.), it will require an initial investment of energy at the highest point at the beginning of the formula. (Just think about how challenging it is when you haven’t been to the gym in a couple weeks, months, or ever…and then trying to get a new routine started!)

Activation Energy is the reason we procrastinate. We wait for our stress level to crest up higher than the energy it takes to start the task.

Years ago I used to believe, for example, that for someone to really make a breakthrough (in any area of their life), that they had to hit a real low point in their life, that there had to be a lot of pain. I realize now that this is both true and false. Let me explain and you’ll see exactly what I mean!

Since we can agree that it takes more mental energy to start a task than to actually do it, now we can get to the exciting part.

If you slightly change the Activation Energy, you can make it significantly easier to stop negative habits and start positive habits.

For example, Shawn talks about how for years he would come home from work tired, and it was very easy for him to plop down on the sofa, grab the
remote for the t.v., and with low activation energy he would push a button, and burn away the evening watching T.V. All the while he knew he had plenty of other things he could be doing, and would rather be doing with that time.

So he took the batteries out of the remote and moved them 20 seconds away to his bedroom. Over the next few days when he came home from work, he (habitually) sat down on the couch, grabbed the remote, pushed the button (of course the T.V. didn’t turn on), and got frustrated. In response, his brain said to him, “Why not just go get the batteries and we can start watching T.V.?” And then it answered, “No, it takes forever to go get those batteries. Let’s do something else.”

What he did was increase the Activation Energy it took to turn on the T.V., and suddenly because it wasn’t so easy, his brain didn’t want to do it
anymore. The path of least resistance led him away from the T.V. and towards things closer and easier. He put work that he needed to get done on one side of the sofa, a book he always wanted to read on a shelf nearby, and his journal and guitar within reach. This made it easier to do the things he actually wanted to do.

What we’re talking about here is consciously manipulating energy by changing your environment.

Years ago in my productivity consulting business, I used to teach my clients the concept of “Leading a Horse to Water”, or the “Salami Concept,” which I touched on in a book I co-authored. I didn’t realize at the time what was behind the reason it was so effective when, for example, I’d tell my clients to just commit to filing away 5 items (or take just 5 minutes) each day, and after they did that, they could be done with that huge filing project for the day.

And usually, they found that after they filed away the 5 things, or completed their five minutes of filing, that they would keep going and do more than what they committed to. Understanding Activation Energy, we know that the energy was lowered, and now that they were into the task, the activation part (the hardest part) was out of the way, so it made it easy to continue on.

Just by making something slightly easier (like moving your gym shoes next to your bed, saving you 20 seconds from going to get them from the closet), is enough for your brain to start tipping toward doing those positive habits that you know you want to do…to become the person you want to be…to have the happiness and success you desire.

You don’t have to wait for your life to become so hard and painful for you before you change your Activation Energy to start changing your life today. And actually, I’d like to urge you now, please don’t wait for it to get  so hard for you to begin! Just change the Activation Energy!

So this is not just a matter of knowing what causes you to be happy or successful, but HOW you can actually do these things that make you happy or
successful.

So, are you ready to start moving your life forward today toward the happiness and success you desire?

I’m so glad My challenge to you today is to look around at your life. Think about the things you KNOW would make you happier and more successful, and find some way of making it easier to do those things, and harder to do the negative habits.

When you do this, you are changing your environment to WORK FOR YOU, to get you the results you want.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Knowledge is power.”

After what you’ve just learned here, I’m sure you’ll agree that’s not quite true.

Knowledge can’t simply equal power on it’s own. You can know WHAT to do and not do it, and it’s just the same as not knowing what to do. I’m sure you’ve heard before that doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results — is insanity.

The greatest separator between super-achievers and those who are not, is not that they don’t know the same things…but that the super-achievers DO and ACT on what they KNOW.

No person can argue that we all want to increase our happiness and meaning, our success, profitability, and overall fulfillment in our lives. And if you’re even just a little like me, you’ve likely done some studying up on these topics, maybe taken some personal development courses, read some personal growth books, or spent some time on self-development sites. To me, it has always been like there are so many pieces to the puzzle, and that even though it’s completely do-able, that it can take a LONG, long time. And let’s be honest here, we all want things to come to us quicker, don’t we?

Recently my friend Jay shared this video with me, when we were having a conversation about what holds people back from their own greatness. It was from that conversation that this video came into play. And I’m happy to say, in just 12 short minutes, things became very clear to me. The simplicity here is mind blowing. OK, so getting to it….

Any expert will agree that the lens we look through and view the world with, shapes our own individual worlds. Where we focus our mind, attention, eyes (etc.)…our mind, body, life follows. The bad news is, the majority of people go through life trying to work with a broken model for happiness and success.  You see, 90% of your long term happiness is not predicted by your external world (i.e. circumstances), but instead, it’s predicated by the way your brain processes the world.

The good news, is that if you can change the way your brain processes the world (and happiness and success); you can affect your reality.

Most companies and schools, for example, follow the model: If I work harder, I will be more successful, and if I’m more successful, then I’ll be happier. It’s scientifically broken and backwards.

And here’s why…

Everytime the brain has a success, you just changed the goal post for what success looks like (you got good grades, now you have to get better grades; you got a good job, now you have to get a better job; you hit your sales mark, now you have to change your sales target).

Now pay attention to this next part, because this is so key and will tie this all together for you!

If happiness is on the other side of success, the brain never gets there.

We think we have to be successful, then we’ll be happier.

The brain works in the opposite order.

And even more good news…when we understand this formula, we can reverse it!

If you can find positive in the present, then your brain will work more successfully. It will be able to work harder, faster and more intelligently. You’ll be able to see what your brain is actually capable of!

Your brain at positive is:
- 31% more productive than when your brain is at negative, neutral or stressed
- 37% better at sales

And doctors are 19% faster and more accurate at coming up with a current diagnosis when positive versus negative, neutral or stressed.

Here’s a scientific take on this to explain what’s going on…

When dopamine floods into your system when you’re positive, it has 2 functions: Not only does it make you happier, but it turns on all of the  learning centers in your brain, allowing you to adapt to the world in a different way.

So how do you train your brain to become more positive?

In just 2 minutes each day, for 21 days in a row, you can rewire your brain, allowing your brain to work more optimistically and more successfully.

- By writing out 3 things that your grateful for (3 new things each day for 21 days), at the end of the 21 days your brain starts to retain a pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.

- Journaling about 1 positive experience you’ve had over the past 24 hours allows your brain to relive it.

- Exercise teaches your brain that your behavior matters.

- Meditation allows your brain to get over the cultural ADHD we’ve been creating by trying to do multiple tasks at once. It allows your brain to focus on the task at hand.

- Random acts of kindness (or conscious acts of kindness). In this research, they had people, when they opened their email inbox, write 1 positive email praising or thanking someone in their social support network.

By doing these activities and by training your brain just like we train our bodies, it’s been found that we can reverse the formula for happiness and success, and in doing so create ripples of positivity and create a real revolution.

If I were to ask you how committed you are to your success and happiness, I wonder what your reply would be. What would you be willing to do? To give? To sacrifice?

Here’s a question you deserve to answer for yourself honestly: Are a few minutes each day worth it to you to finally make your breakthrough?

Today Matthew and I are celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary. Congratulations have been flowing in, and amidst them, I keep thinking, “Wow, has it really already been 9 years??”

Some wonder, “Has it been a happy 9 years?”  Frankly, I have to LOL… “Man, that is a loaded question!”

After masterminding with one of my mentors this morning on the power of your thoughts, it got me thinking back to a time in our relationship that was (no holding back here) – dreadful. No, it wasn’t peaches and cream, and rainbows and red licorice.  It was, the least to say, a rough road…I’m quite sure we encountered a few dungeons and dragons.

It took us a few years to get to the point where we had enough, and decided to draw a line in the sand in our marriage. We began to search for wisdom, for a new perspective and understanding. We chose a new battle – not one with each other, but FOR each other.

The Power Of Your Thoughts…You Are What You Think!

Once we agreed to our quest, we quickly found the new perspective and understanding – and here it is in a nutshell:  When we focused on the negative things of the past, we simply got more of that – negativity.  It wasn’t just negativity by way of reflecting on our past, but it was continuing to show up in our present day. Are you beginning to understand the power of your thoughts?

After our new perspective, we learned that if you truly want to end failure, struggle and disappointments (in any area of life), you must understand the power of your thoughts.

You see, offering services such as reviews, education, or even technical support will often help bring the buyer’s guard down, as they begin to see you as a person, and not some scam artist who is just hiding behind the internet, waiting for their next victim.

• Be yourself and use your strengths to provide solutions. – The truth of the matter is when someone is hiding behind the internet, they can attempt to be whomever you may be looking for. You know the type, jack of all trades, but masters of none. When you lead with REAL value, you will see that buyers will really appreciate you for who you are. As long as your offer is valuable and provides the buyer with a solution, you will build a level of trust with that buyer and increase the chances that they will buy from you and not your competitors.

The bottom line is hiding behind the internet is no longer a viable strategy for any online business. There is no doubt that building relationships based on trust and simply providing solutions to online buyers is the driving force of the new online economy. So with that being said, you have to ask yourself this one key question: Are you ready to evolve or are you going to pull those covers back over your head and continue hiding behind the internet?

Status quo is defined as “the existing state of affairs (at a particular time)” or “the situation as it currently exists.”

Some call it accepting what you have, but the fact of the matter is the status quo is survival but not living.

It’s accepting who you are, not who you were born to be. Living your life listening to those who tell you want you cannot do.

Walking through your life, accepting what you have and never striving for what you deserve.

It’s spending your time waiting for tomorrow and not enjoying today. It’s dreaming big, but never putting your dreams into action.

Status Quo – Is not telling those you love… “I Love You!”

It’s seeing true opportunity and looking away!

Wasting your valuable time worrying about the problems, not doing what you can do to solve them.

Living your life carefully; not the care free life you should be living. Believing that because you are only one person, “What difference can I make?”

I leave you with this last thought. Whatever you believe, know this….You may accept the status quo right now, but the leader inside you will always challenge it.

“Lay off the HIGH ones!” – The (In)Effective Way To Encourage

Ever heard anything like this at a ball game?  I know I have…more times than I care to reflect on. Who was it coming from, you may wonder? Well I’m happy to say it wasn’t my parents…well, the “come on, you can do it” part was.    My folks encouraged me in a different, more productive way.

I’ll come back to this in a minute, but first, let me paint a picture that might be closer to the world you live in right now. Last weekend I had the pleasure of spending time with dear friends, from all around the world. It was almost like a big family reunion. Lots of smiles, laughs, reminiscing & excitedly sharing plans for the future. But during this great time together, there was one conversation that stayed with me for days.

It was quite a heated conversation, between our friends, who are husband and wife. Both desire the same end result, but were communicating in completely different manners. The wife wanted to encourage her husband, but he wasn’t hearing what she was saying as encouragement. It took me back to my days of playing ball, and the lessons I learned about the brain and encouragement.

You probably already know this, but you tend to do what your brain focuses on most. Think about it – you’re driving down the road, and suddenly something on the opposite side of the road catches your eyes, and next thing you know, you’re drifting into the other lane.

I’ve learned the same is true for what we want and don’t want in our lives. If you say to yourself that your goal is to get out of debt, and so every day you repeat to yourself “I want to get out of debt,” what do you think your mind is focused on?  It’s focused on the word “debt”.  Your mind doesn’t differentiate that you DON’T want the debt…it just pays attention to the word, “debt”. A perfect illustration of this is consider saying to a dog, “I’m not going to take you for a walk today.” How do you expect the dog to respond?  He’s going to think you’re taking him for a walk! He just noticed the word “walk”, and now he’s jumping around, thinking he’s going with you for a walk.

Not only is our “self talk”, the things we think or say to ourselves extremely important when it comes to what we want and don’t want, but so is what comes from those who we take instruction or encouragement from. If I was encroaching upon learning a new skill set, and my husband, Matthew, said to me, “You can do it…just don’t screw it up”, how do think I might receive that? What do you think my brain is going to pay attention to most? (The “screw it up” part, right?)

What do we do when someone says, “Don’t worry about it.” Same thing, right?? We begin to worry about it. I always hated hearing this when I was playing ball. The pitcher would throw a bad pitch, or the batter would swing at a bad pitch…and then I’d hear from the crowd (or even worse, the bench!) “Don’t worry about it!” “Just lay of the high ones!”

By now you are beginning to see a pattern here. There are positive, effective ways (and negative, ineffective ways) to encourage others. Tell each other what you WANT to see, or what results THEY want to see. So for example, with the spouse who hasn’t seen their partner do well with a similar situation in the past, they might say something like, “You know sweetie, in the past you had difficulty with this, but I have confidence in you that you have learned from your past, and that you have new resources in front of you that THIS time, you’re going to do great.”

Back to the days of playing ball…you may wonder, how did my parents encourage me when I made a mistake? They would say, “Shake it off, Chris! You’ve got this! You’ll get the next one! You know what a good pitch looks like now!”  I could go on and on…reflecting on the encouragement I received from my folks brings a huge smile to my face. 

Just think about the smiles you’ll bring to the faces of those you encourage. It could be your spouse, your business partner, a friend, your child, an associate, employee, family member…even a complete stranger.

You can make a difference today by being a leader, and showing the positive and effective way to encourage someone today. Be the example!

Going For Your Dreams

Today I’m celebrating a personal victory…not only for achieving my
dream, but for my husband, Matthew, achieving his dream, as well.
So what’s the victory? One year ago we began our journey of going
after our dream of being healthy again.  We were both overweight and
frustrated, after consistently working out at the gym for 2 years
prior. To be frank, months before I had nearly given up hope…I had
given in to the idea that this was just the way my body would be.
Eating well and working out weren’t doing anything to change it. So
I was just going to accept me as I was, even though I wasn’t
thrilled about it.

It’s been quite a journey over this last year, and in the interest of keeping this post short, I’ll save the details for another conversation.   Long story made short, I went from a near size 16 down to an 8, and lost more than 50 pounds of fat. I’m celebrating being at 15% body fat…and most of all, that I feel GREAT with all that extra weight off my little 5 foot 4 inch frame! Matthew achieved spectacular results, as well…more than 60 pounds of fat gone and he’s now at 11% body fat. Yes, today we’re celebrating!

BUT – what does this have to do with your dreams??

The fact is, whatever dreams you may have (getting healthy, building a successful business, getting out of debt, etc.)…it’s not just a matter of deciding, or even committing to go for them. It’s the follow through that matters, going for your dreams no matter how long it takes. The problem is, there are three major obstacles that come up for most of us when we are going for our dreams. My expectation is that you will gather some perspective from my past year’s journey and be able to apply it right now to your dream, to insure that you, too, will achieve it!

The first obstacle of going for your dreams is other people’s opinions. Let’s be real here…if your dream is big enough, it’s not going to be easy, nor will it be popular or convenient. You’ll sometimes find others telling you, “well this is just the way you are”, or “are you crazy? you’re risking too much”, or “come on, you really don’t have to work on that right now.” Every excuse in the book will pop up in front of you when you’re going for your dreams. When your dream is big enough, it’s going to require you to get out of your comfort zone and to have faith in what’s unseen as you’re working toward your dream. You may find, like us, that there are times you don’t fit into the crowd, you may even be taunted, and find that staying focused on your dream causes many inconveniences.

The second obstacle of going for your dreams is the obstacle of fear. “What if I put in all this effort, all this work, all this money, all this time…and I don’t get results?” Sure, it’s a legitimate question. One of the best things you can do to insure that this obstacle doesn’t get in your way is to build up as much proof to yourself on the front end of WHY it’s going to work. Sometimes logic, or science, or other proof measures can do this for you, and other times, it comes right back to faith. For us, it required all of these.

But let’s be honest with each other, even when we’ve overcome others opinions and pushed through fear time and time again, there may come a time (or two, or three…) that we find ourselves dealing with the third obstacle of going for your dreams. And that is quitting. “I can’t stop eating this way,” “I can’t succeed at this,” “I can’t learn this,” “I can’t change my habits”, “I can’t figure this out.” I can’t, I can’t, I can’t (fill in the
blank).

Going For Your Dreams…Never Give Up!

Let’s look at this with a different perspective. Take what it is that you’re saying “I can’t” about, and replace the word “can’t” with “won’t.” “I won’t stop eating this way,” “I won’t learn this,” “I won’t figure this out.” It really changes things, doesn’t it? So when you find yourself thinking or saying, “I can’t”, just be honest with yourself and say, “I won’t.”  I realize this is pretty blunt…but no one ever said going for your dreams would be easy or feel great all of the time.

The truth is, quitting is not failing. Rather, quitting is a process. The mind is trying to figure out what is out of place. Think back to when you were first learning how to do a somersault, a cart wheel or a hand stand. Did you get it perfect the 1st time, the 2nd, the 3rd, or 4th time? Probably not. Your mind had to figure out what was out of place, which arm to place more weight on, which way to lean, how much to push and how quickly. As a child when you were learning how to do these maneuvers, did you ever think on your 1st or even your 4th try that you failed? You probably just started over and tried again, without giving much thought to it. Sometimes when we are pursuing our dreams, we find ourselves having to start over. It doesn’t mean we’ve given up on the dream, it just means that we’re giving it “a go” again to figure out what was out of place before.

Understand that with each moment of going for your dreams, you are one courageous choice away from pushing through the fear, past others opinions, and pressing on to finish the race.

If you have a dream, don’t you dare think it’s going to be easy. There’s a saying that goes, “This world will never give me more than I can handle.” Look to all of the great triumphs in our history, and even those happening today. You don’t even have to ask those who were a part of it if it was easy. This world would be quite a boring place if adversity didn’t exist!  Think about some of your favorite movies…what struggles occurred? Can you imagine the movie without the struggles? NO! It would be boring and no one would watch it!

Any great and inspiring leader or organization that ever existed set out to do something completely unrealistic. When your dream is that big, and you have a burning desire for it, no excuse — no person’s opinions, no amount of fear, and no matter how many times you have to start over again or how long it takes — you will go for your dreams and achieve them. And not only will you forever change your life, but you will do the same for others (some you know and others who you don’t know) because of what you went through will inspire others to do the same.

Legitimate Home Business Opportunity – What To Look For

It seems these days that more and more people are looking to start a legitimate home business opportunity – BUT, most people aren’t sure where to start, and who or what companies to trust.  Just the other day I had someone ask me for advice on how to discern what is a legitimate business opportunity, from one that is not (and potentially is a scam).

Here are a few points I shared, but before I get started, let me first impress upon you that these are just my own opinions and thoughts based on my past and present experiences on this topic.  I won’t claim that I know it all, or that there aren’t different perspectives here…but I feel these are some key points that you may want to consider when seeking out a legitimate business opportunity.

First – do your due diligence. You owe it to yourself (and to anyone else who is counting on you) to do a fair amount of research on the company, as well as the individuals/people who would be working with you, helping you to get your business started.  If the company is fake or is a scam, it’s more likely than not that you will find info about them being fake online. People speak up online when they are scammed.

However, I do want to add an additional perspective to this. You probably have noticed that the internet is somewhat like a bathroom wall…anyone can write whatever they want on it.  All kinds of effort and money (and good attorneys) can be needed to get misinformation removed from the web.  So keep this in mind as you do your research.  If you find one negative comment, dig deeper.  Sometimes misunderstandings or folks who had unrealistic expectations will ‘pop off’ and submit biased and undeserved comments about a person or a company (i.e. someone throwing money at a business opportunity, not taking action or the right kind of action, and getting no results, then getting mad and calling it a scam).

Second – if you’re being told that a particular business opportunity will guarantee that you will make any amount of money, consider it a red flag. I say this because with any business there are no guarantees. It’s a business, and there’s always the human variable.

Third – when it comes to finding a legitimate online business, it’s kind of like shopping for anything of value. If it’s free or cheap, you’re probably going to get in value what you paid for.

So if someone tells you that you can ‘buy this e-book for $19′ and that you’re going to have a successful business within a month…RUN.  You are looking to start a business that will include all the pieces to the puzzle…and e-books, just as an example, only give you one or two pieces; not enough to really get your business going or keep it going.

One last thought – If you are being told that “anyone can do it” or be successful with it, that’s another red flag.  Consider this… If a business is accepting anyone and everyone, no matter what type of person they are, what does that say about how they value their company?  You see, I witnessed this very thing in a prior business venture I became a part of several years ago.  The company accepted anyone, so long as they were willing to invest money to “join” to become a representative and to be able to resale their products.  Unfortunately, a number of bad apples came on board, and it didn’t take long for unhappy customers to go online and start bad-mouthing the company.  It really had nothing to do with the company or the product (both were actually very high caliber)…it had to do with the individuals.

So after learning this valuable lesson, when I began my search for a legitimate business opportunity a couple years ago, I wanted to find something rare, something that WOULD NOT be for everyone.  We all want to be part of something special, don’t we?

It’s a proven fact that your net worth is determined your network…the people you surround yourself with on a daily basis.  So stop and ask yourself this one key question:   You’re ready to be part of something special, aren’t you?  Don’t let hesitation or fear stop you from taking control of your life and finding a legitimate business opportunity that works for you.

Scam #2 – You Can Make Money Easily.

If it’s that easy, everyone would be doing it! We are programmed to take the path of least resistance, that being said…Anything that has a claim of being “easy” is already or eventually will be saturated with people trying to stake their claim. Here’s a secret…Only the “hard way”, the path that most people ignore, will actually allow you to make money easily!

Scam #3 – The Pyramid Scheme.

Often confused with Multi-level Marketing, in my dictionary this is scam! Often using a system where you will need to pay more to sustain the commissions, and not allow you to prosper until you reach the top. They don’t focus on providing a good product, services or education, just scamming those who are looking for a better way of life.

Scam #4 – Free Affiliate Program.

Some affiliate programs claim that they can make you tons of money, but do not require you to purchase their product, nor charge sign up fees. My suggestion: ignore them! Over time these programs will also become so saturated, it will become difficult to find a good way to market them online or anywhere. Any expert will agree you must have long term, high demand affiliate products to market – and that when you’re marketing a product or service, you should experience the product/service for yourself…I like to call it integrity!

Scam #5 – You Don’t Have To Know Marketing.

BEWARE of this statement ”You don’t have to know marketing to be successful online”! You’re intelligent enough to know that if you want to have a successful business you must know how to market. Clearly most have no marketing experience when starting an online business. That is why it’s SO important for you to have access to the education to properly teach you everything about online marketing. It will also give you the resources to begin to earn enough money to sustain your life as you develop your skills!

Don’t Mess With The Best Bite

Lori’s 92 year old grandmother recently joined us for dinner. I roasted a prime rib for our meal that night and then watched in amazement as this tiny lady ate me under the table. While I’d like to chalk up her hearty appetite to my culinary prowess, in truth she lives in a beautiful assisted living facility here in town where all her meals are prepared for her. After a while, I’m sure, their food all begins to taste the same and she just enjoys something new and different. (But, I must say, my prime rib was awesome.)

Anyway, as she was working on her second enormous serving of prime rib I noticed that she was eating around this one particular bite-size cut of meat on the center of her plate. After a while my curiosity got the best of me and, using my own fork as a pointer, I asked her, “Grandma, what’s wrong with that bite right there?”

“That’s my best bite,” she growled at me while waving her fork in the air dangerously close to my face. “Don’t even think about touching it.”

And because she’s 92 and her sharpest memories are often decades old, she proceeded to tell us about the dangers of messing with her “best bite”. Turns out when she was just a newlywed, she and her husband Bill used to save up their pennies all week long and, on payday, they’d go out and get a hot dog.

Not a hotdog, fries and a soda, mind you. That was not in their meager budget. Just one hot dog each. Grandma had eaten her hot dog from both ends and there, on her napkin, sat the center of her hotdog – the “best bite” she’d saved for last. But in one fell swoop, new husband Bill, thinking she was finished, grabbed the “best bite” and popped it in to his mouth. And then there was a fight. And pouting. And eventually an apology from Bill, but nothing could undo the stolen “best bite” and, because they didn’t have the money for another hot dog, there was no way to make it right.

Lori, the kids and I sat mesmerized at Grandma’s every word as she re-told the story of the lost “best bite”. And it got me thinking about how the best stories all seem to involve some sort of conflict. If this little spat between Grandma and Bill hadn’t involved a little drama – if she’d just shrugged off the stolen “best bite” instead of dissolving into tears – chances are we wouldn’t have been sitting around the table in 2010 listening to a story about a 70 year old hot dog.

But that conflict – that drama – is obviously what makes the story interesting. Our lives, really, are just stories waiting to be told. Many of us live a life resisting and avoiding challenging circumstances and conflict when that’s what we’ll remember as juicy and interesting as we sit back in our old age and revisit the dramatic arc of our lives.

One of my favorite books is “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life”, by Donald Miller. In it he makes this personal observation as he examines his life to date:

“I didn’t want Don to embrace conflict. I wanted it to be an easy story. But nobody really remembers easy stories. Characters have to face their greatest fears with courage. That’s what makes a story good. If you think about the stories you like most, they probably have lots of conflict. There is probably death at stake, inner death or actual death, you know. These polar charges, these happy and sad things in life, are like colors God uses to draw the world.”

Upon realizing that his life had thus far been defined by playing it safe, Miller goes on to say this:

“If you watched a movie about a guy who wanted a Volvo and worked for years to get it, you wouldn’t cry at the end when he drove off the lot, testing the windshield wipers. You wouldn’t tell your friends you saw a beautiful movie or go home and put a record on to think about the story you’d just seen. The truth is, you wouldn’t remember that movie a week later, except you’d feel robbed and want your money back. Nobody cries at the end of a movie about a guy who wants a Volvo. but we spend years actually living those stories, and expect our lives to feel meaningful. The truth is, if what we choose to do with our lives won’t make a story meaningful, it won’t make a life meaningful either.”

Regardless of your feelings about New Year’s Resolutions, the fact of the matter is January 1 is a great day to begin a new chapter in your life – to begin to tell a different story. A bigger story. A better story. A more meaningful story. My challenge for each and every one of you is to face this upcoming year with open arms, PLAY BIG, and embrace all that comes your way – the good, the bad, the ugly and the great – and create your more interesting story.

If, however, you happen to be dining at my home, as many of you have, and Grandma happens to be here … whatever you do, don’t touch her “best bite”! I can’t promise it will end well for you.

What will be the best 2011 home business for you?

As December ticks away, the office parties and gathering with friends and family will be on everyone’s mind.

The thought of business or starting a home business is generally the last thing most people are thinking about during the holidays.

But should it be?

January is always a hot bed for starting a business especially one from home. Now maybe this fact comes from New Years Resolutions, or maybe it’s the horror of opening those credit card bills.

My opinion…is that January is a reset for all of us. The idea of being your own boss, finally having a small business or home business vs another year making someone else rich… January is a time that starting a business really seems possible.

Earlier I asked the question…”What will be the best 2011 home business for you?”.

Now I can almost hear your mind saying “One that makes money”!

True…a home business should be profitable, but that is the end result. When looking at a business opportunity, one should be looking from a logical point of view, not the emotional stance most take when choosing a business model.

Just think about it, any business opportunity can say “You’ll make a ton of money”.

I’m sure you will agree, that this is an emotional point of view. But notice how I didn’t tell you how, or what you would be doing, I just went directly to your emotions.

You’ve got to wonder how much higher the percentage of successful home businesses there would be if more people did their due diligence and approached business opportunities with a factual, more rational mindset.

Let me ask you a question, when you go to buy a car, is the amount of miles the car will go over it’s lifetime even on your mind?

If you’re like me…that bit of information never makes it on the Q & A list. Buying a car is about how we will use the features to benefit our lives, and so the features and benefits are what you ask about. How far you will drive the car depends on how well it benefits your lifestyle.

Are you beginning to see that when you focus on what a business system can do, and not the business opportunity itself, your business model will have a much higher chance achieving your home business goals.

Line In The Sand

Imagine picking up your child, looking into their eyes and realizing they don’t know who you are.

As tragic as this sounds, it’s a true story of one of my good friends and mentors, and it was his line in the sand moment.

He chose not to be a victim; not to blame it on his work or anyone else. He simply made the decision to take control of his life.

For me, my line in the sand moment was the day that realized that I had lost control of my life. I had managed to chain myself back to a desk. Dreading Mondays, working 60 plus hours a week, and having no time for my family or friends.

Sound familiar?

I could have just decided to accept that this was just the way things were and always would be. I was working from my dream home and making good money when I realized my family and I deserved something more.

Picture for a moment that it is one month from today, and as you’re visualizing this in your mind, you may notice the feeling of anxiety growing. Your mind perceives this as a problem, but you deserve to embrace it as the solution.

I would like to help you experience your line in the sand moment.

But first, let me ask you a personal question…are you ready to take control of your life?

I can almost hear your mind saying “Yes, I am ready,” but are you…REALLY?

How The “Dumbo Effect” Kills Entrepreneurs

Let me tell you about the elephant man.

No… not from the movie.

The OTHER elephant man.

Basically, there was this guy who really wanted to be a home based entrepreneur.  He had a family he never saw due to slaving away at his 9-5 job each day.  He commuted 2 hours to and from work (4 hours total).  And, to make matters worse, he was always afraid of being laid off.

So he decided to find a home based business.

But, he didn’t want to do anything until he was “ready.”

So he started going to night college to take business and marketing
classes.  He did that for a few years, seeing even LESS of his
family.  And when he graduated from there, he decided he was
“ready.”

He had all kinds of ideas.

Lots of book smarts about business.

And had even graduated at the top of his class.

So he went forth to find a home business to join.

Eventually, he found one.

But a funny thing happened.

None of his fancy business education made any difference.

In fact, he never even USED anything he learned.

And it kind of saddened him.

He wasted all that time and money going to school, when he already
had everything he needed (the right mindset and goals) to do the
business.

He was sort of like “Dumbo.”

Ever see that movie as a kid?

Dumbo the elephant in the cartoon only thought he could fly when he
held the so-called “magic feather.”  But, in reality, he already
had what it took to fly without the feather.

And it was the same with this guy.

(Thus, they called him the elephant man.)

All that extra education did was hold him BACK.

Waste more time and money.

And was like a crutch he didn’t need.

Listen, chances are you already have what it takes to be successful
in your own home based business or you wouldn’t be reading my
posts.

Throw the feather away.

Get started.

Belief: Your Key Component To Getting Results (In Business)

You don’t know it yet but, at the end of this page, you will have learned how to unlock ‘to-the-core’ belief that will create the results you desire in your business (and anything else in your life that matters to you)!

But first, a story to bring it all together….

It’s day 11 of my 14 day lean down on my current fitness training and food regimen. I have to admit that this morning at the gym my body really didn’t feel like being there. Heck, getting out of bed at a quarter to 6:00 should have been enough of a challenge. But the fact that my body didn’t feel like being at the gym had nothing to do with feeling sleepy, nor did it have to do with my desire to work out. To put it simply (and to get real personal with you), it’s that time of the month and it’s kicking my butt. If you’re a woman, or you’ve spent enough time with a woman, you know this ‘time of the month’ can be a real challenge, and a downer for that matter.

So combine that with 11 days of eating no more than 1500 calories, 100 grams of protein and 70 grams of carbs – and not just any carbs…but pretty much just squash and zucchini EVERY DAY…and you’ve got a bit of a challenge, haven’t you? But not me…not this time.

Yes, that’s right, I not only went to the gym, but I gave it my best and accomplished everything planned out for my time at the gym. You may be thinking, “Why, Christine? You could have just skipped it…after all, you had to be feeling awful.” It’s just one day, what difference could it really make? And my response to you is, well yes, I COULD have skipped it, and yes, my body was feeling awful. But my mind and my heart weren’t.

I didn’t have to battle with myself to get up, nor to drive to the gym, nor to execute my regimen at the gym this morning. Why, you may curiously be wondering? Because I believed to my core that it was worth it, and even cutting out just one day wasn’t an option for me. You may be thinking that I’m just a case of someone who is hard core, and unbalanced about working out. But that’s truly not the case.

Sometimes when we’re working through big obstacles, we come to a fork in the road where we can take the easy path (letting up) or the challenging path (pressing on or through). What gets us to confidently choose the challenging path is the BELIEF that even the little things WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. So how do you get that kind of belief…the belief that causes you to take action, even when you don’t feel like it, even when it’s uncomfortable? We’ll get to that in just a moment, but first let me give you a bit of a framework.

One action, or even just one workout (in this case) can AND DOES make a difference. And it’s not just about the physical results…it’s about what happens mentally to us when we let up. This morning was more about me proving that I could overcome; about proving to myself that I no longer give in when the going gets tough. For many of us, that has been a pattern for many years of our lives. Frankly, I got sick and tired of being sick and tired of not being the REAL Christine, and I made the choice that those days are in the past, and going forward, I will give my best to everything I do…with my body, my marriage, my relationships, my health, my business, my customers, my business partners…did I say everything? Yes, everything. Why not live my best life now?

After 2 years of working hard, going to the gym even to the point of 6 days a week, I had very little results…actually, let’s just call it no results. So finally coming to the point of realizing that I didn’t know everything about the best way to get ‘the old Christine’ back, I sat down with a trainer to find out what I was doing wrong. The short answer was that I was burning up every bit of muscle as fast as I was building it. I was muscle deficient, and therefore I didn’t have enough muscle to burn off the fat. May 1st of this year I hired the trainer, whom I check in with every couple of weeks now to get my body fat measured, and to make sure that the plan we have is getting me the results that it should during that particular phase.

This is a key reason WHY I was so committed to making this day count. I BELIEVED that this one day would make a difference because I experienced it the last time around on my previous training cycle and had amazing results (31 pounds of fat loss in 2 months, to be exact). And even before I had ANY results to show for, I had a trainer that I trusted in because of his knowledge, his experience, and the results of those he worked with. Not only that, but my trainer (who really has become my health mentor…he’s also a D.O.M.) DOES this same regimen himself. If it works for him, then why wouldn’t it work for me?

So back to the question at hand, “How do you get the kind of belief that causes you to take action, even when you don’t feel like it, even when it’s uncomfortable?” My opinion is this: proof. Proof either that others have been able to do it; or proof by experiencing it for yourself.

Let’s start with “proof by others” first. By hearing from them over and over again, or by being around them frequently, will begin to challenge your subconscious mind’s beliefs about your abilities to be able to do the same as others who have achieved the success that you’re looking to achieve. And then there’s yourself. If you’ve never experienced it before, it can be very challenging for your mind to believe it. However, if you have done it before, then you know it’s just a matter of applying the same principles, processes or plans…and then just executing. (Which is where I’m at now in my 2nd training cycle.)

You may have found it a bit strange that the title of this article was “Belief: Your Key Component To Getting Results (In Business).”  But there’s a  reason I had “In Business” set apart.  What I’ve been discussing relates to pretty much anything in which we’re working toward to get positive results. So far I’ve been primarily speaking to fitness and weight loss; however, what I realized at the gym this morning as I was thinking about all of this, was that ALL of this applies to business, too.  It  especially can be applied to new entrepreneurs; those who are new to business and don’t necessarily have the experience to pull from this ‘to-the-core’ belief while getting their business off the ground.

Here are some key lessons that are applicable to new and veteran entrepreneurs:

1. Developing a ‘to-the-core’ belief in yourself and your business is what will carry you through the challenges that you invariably will come upon.

2. To develop this belief you must surround yourself by those who are or have accomplished what it is that you’ve set out to do. If you’ve never done it before, how will you know what it takes, what plan to follow, etc., to be able to get the results you desire? (Remember my story about 2 years at the gym, doing it on my own?)

3. If you don’t have anyone guiding you, leading you down the path that they’ve already been down – make it a TOP PRIORITY to find someone (or even a community of these people) now.

My husband and I found ourselves in unfamiliar territory about 2 years ago when we decided to start a business online. Fortunately, we found not only one mentor who has achieved success with this, but we found a community of mentors and leaders who have achieved and are still achieving success with their online businesses. (Much like my trainer…he’s had success, and yet he’s still doing what he teaches his clients.)

I really hadn’t planned going here today, but I’m feeling led to do so at this point. As this article ends, think about the value of having a ‘to-the-core’ belief in yourself and in what you’re doing in your business day in and day out.  I’m sure you can see by now how critical this component is to your long term success in anything you do.

Ask yourself this: are you finding yourself struggling along with your business, or do you realize that you don’t have anyone showing you, and helping you to create a plan that will get you to the success you’re pushing for?

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired at feeling lost in your business direction, unsure of what you’re doing and if all the efforts you’re putting out are even doing anything to get you closer to your goals?

What if you found out there was a community of entrepreneurs, in which you could receive not just ONE mentor to guide you and instill in you a ‘to-the-core’ belief, but many mentors who you could have access to every day of the week to keep you on track and committed…making each day count?

Common Sense Obituary

Posted by (This article was first published March 15, 1998 in the Indianapolis Star. It has been reprinted countless times sometimes attributed anonymously. The original author is Lori Borgman.)

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain; accidents may happen; If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home but the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little on her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughters, Responsibility and Integrity and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights; I Want It Now; Someone Else Is To Blame and I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

The “Why” Of Leadership

Over our last few discussions we have focused on the “WHY” factor and how it effects our businesses. Today, I would like to continue by expanding on this topic, discussing the correlation between your “WHY” and your leadership.

As we recap our conversation about your “WHY” by looking at the partnership between these two aspects, it will become clear that having a strong “WHY” is the core to being a great leader.

It just so happens, last week I heard a great analogy on this subject while master minding with others leaders in our industry.

I would have to say that this analogy is by far the simplest way to discuss the “WHY” factor. The example used was attending an event that requires a ticket providing you with an assigned seat. For our example I will use box seats at a ball game.

Now, your “WHY” in this example is getting to your seats.

Think about it, you purchased the tickets you came to the park, you complete all the steps necessary to put yourself in a position to find your seats.

**I want to make a quick point here…it’s very important for you to understand this. Many people never achieve their dreams, because they are caught up in finding their “WHY”.
Your “WHY” doesn’t have to be a world changing mission; just a simple meaningful idea that will inspire to you and keep you reaching for your goals and achieving your dreams no matter what happens.

OK…Continuing with our example, again you established your “WHY” (getting to your seats) and you took the necessary steps to get to the game.

This is where it all begins to come together. You will now meet someone, a person who is going to help you, even lead you. In your encounter with this person, you will find there is connection between the two of you. That connection is sharing the same “WHY”…getting you to your seat.

The person I am speaking of is the usher. He or she is not there to sell you anything, direct you to other seats that they think are better. This person just kindly asks you, “May I see your ticket?” and proceeds to lead you down the most direct route to your seats.

Keep in mind…the usher can’t sit in the seat for you, or watch the game and tell you how it ended. He or she merely provides you with the leadership needed to show you exactly where to go. But when it comes time to sit, the usher steps aside allowing you to take your seat.

Take a moment and step outside box and look at the leaders around you. I’m not speaking of those in government, rather of those true leaders in your community… individuals who give without expectation of receiving anything.

Ask yourself what makes them a great leader. Now ask yourself if you possess the same qualities. The answer is “yes”; we all have qualities to become great leaders. However; the only difference is great leaders possess the highest sense of purpose. Their “WHY” factor is so strong, NOTHING will ever let them be defeated.

You see, to true leaders, goals are only steps to be climbed to reach a higher mission in their life. Leaders don’t search for the answers, they find them. They use their experiences to enlighten others to harness their God given skills and empower these same people to achieve their dreams.

I have had the privilege and the honor to have worked with some great leaders and for this I am eternally grateful. I would like to point out that you don’t have to search far to find a true leader. They are all around you. Getting their attention is your first task, and to do this…show them you deserve to their counsel. Be humble, but confident…knowledgeable, but teachable.

I leave you today with this challenge: seek out a leader. Don’t just look for a leader to follow, but to gain access to their knowledge. Use their experience to inspire you to develop your higher sense of purpose…

Why Those Who Mind Don’t Matter

Have you ever thought about those words?  Think about it…people who matter don’t mind when you are being who you are and saying what you feel.  And on the other hand, those who do mind, really don’t matter.

It’s a bold statement, I know.  The first time I heard this from my friend and mentor John, it made such an impression on me…and because of it, I changed who I was being.

Strong leaders have a willingness to be open and honest…they take a stand for what they believe in and don’t apologize for it.  Think about the leaders you know or are familiar with in this world.  Chances are, if they are really taking a stand, they have offended someone…maybe even you.

Now let’s apply this to you.  When YOU take a stand, there’s a chance that you will repel others.  And if you don’t repel anyone, your stand isn’t big enough.

Are you taking a stand in your life or in your business?  What kind of life do you want?  And are you willing to be open and honest about it?

What kind of people are you committed to?  Are they people who are committed to doing the same (taking a stand)?

The world is full of followers who are looking for somebody to lead them, to take a stand.  They are tired of the wishy-washy, him-hawing indecisive people that are telling others to believe in them and follow them.

It’s critical that the next generation of leaders have perspective, knowledge and understanding to be who they are and say what they feel…and they deserve to understand that if people take offense, it shouldn’t affect the stand that they have.  There are people who will see them doing this as an example of a strong leader…one whom they will choose to follow.

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.

You are looking for those that don’t mind that you’re willing to take a stand.

Inspect the different areas of your life and business.  Are you being wishy-washy?  Are you him-hawing?  Are you saying what you mean and meaning what you say?  Are you straight-talking, even when you know that doing so may repel some people?

If you find that you are censoring yourself or diluting your message to others, perhaps it’s time to receive that those who take offense don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.  So be who you are and say what you feel.  The world will be a better place because of it.

You’re probably wondering what it is that I stand for.  First and foremost, I’m a stand that you truly be who you are and really say what you feel.  I’m a stand for people to know truth, to pull their heads out of the sand even when it’s uncomfortable.  I’m a stand that people know the truth of what’s ahead in our economy.  I’m a stand that people take responsibility and control of their lives through education, knowledge and taking action.  I’m a stand that every person who wants to learn more about what really affects their lives, beyond what is being taught in schools, have the knowledge that this education exists and there is a way to receive it.  I’m a stand that you deserve to know what’s not being talked about in the media.

How Will You Control Your Destiny?

If you could look into the future…if you could determine what you future would look like, what would you see?

The more important question is “What do you want your future to look like?”  How would you want it to look?

Would your future reflect ongoing happiness?  Would it be full of joy?  Would it be a nice, balanced life?  Would you feel good about how you spent your time?

Would things come easy or would there be struggle?

Would there be stress, worry, and anxiety, or rather a life full of enjoyment?

Would you have love in your life?

Would you future hold prosperity or toil?

What would you choose?  Yes, that’s right…I just asked, “What would you choose?”  Many people, myself included, have at one time or another NOT realized that we choose our future.  Our actions (or lack thereof), determine our future.  If we don’t plan on our future or lack taking action for our future, we are essentially making a choice about our future.  This lack of action I’m speaking of may affect your retirement, your relationships, your health, your work, your business, your family, your friends and more.

If you are not taking action or are not taking the right actions, you are effectively deciding what your future will be.  And it’s not just your own future that will be affected, but also the lives of those around you.

The good news is…it’s not too late!  We can start from where we are at and take action, and choose what we want our future to look like going forward.  With that good news, what actions are you committing to taking, starting today?  Maybe it will be to give up some of the time you spend watching TV, and instead invest that time into your relationships, your health, education, business or financial future.  Previously I wrote about some different perspectives on taking action, how you spend your time, and your priorities.  If this article ‘got you thinking’, I encourage you to go back and visit these previous articles: “Test Your Priority IQ” and “Does the Way You Spend Your Time Reflect Your Priorities?”

Leading Yourself

I would like to continue our conversation about your WHY.  Now we all know when you’re talking about your WHY, leadership will eventually come up in the conversation. I admit, leadership is a term that is often loosely thrown around, but make no mistake…your leadership skills are absolutely critical to your success.

Now you are probably saying, “If I’m in business for myself, then whom would I be leading?”

Well, the answer is simple…anyone and everyone who is your prospect. But most importantly you MUST lead yourself.

Everyone knows that people don’t buy what your selling; they buy WHY your selling it. So if you’re not clear on your WHY, do you really expect others to buy it? Being a leader that others will follow and to yourself, taking a stand for your own success, is not always an easy task.  But when you master this skill, your personal and financial future will never be the same.

Remember when you were in high school? We all had a class clown. Most of the time the person was not the best student (no offense to class clowns), but we all followed them in some way. They were a leader; but not in the sense of what we think a leader is today.  It was that carefree “say anything” mindset that sold us on watching their antics.

Just picture having that same “class clown” in corporate America.

If you worked with them, would they be a leader you would still follow today?

Just think about that and we’ll get back to it in a minute.

Now pull up a chair and listen close, because I am going to let you in on a secret that will help you develop your leadership skills. What I’m going to reveal is a very simple, but powerful aspect of every successful entrepreneur.  This little bit of information will help you master the task of leading yourself.

So here it is… Form Your Own Personal Board Of Directors!

You may or may not have heard of this concept, but it is extremely powerful. Your personal board of directors will be your private mastermind group to gain counsel on your dealings and will hold you accountable for you actions or lack thereof.

The best part of this board is you can pick whoever you want…seriously.  Bill Gates, Derek Jeter, or even George Washington (Yes…The First President).

They can be alive or passed on; they can be in business, sport icons, or entertainers. What does matter is that you only pick people you truly admire; a person that would make you want to take notes when they were talking…a person getting the results you want.

Now I can hear you, “How can you master mind with someone who has passed on?” And before you go there – no, the answer is not a Ouija board! But rather by studying the way they lived, what made them tick, or how they ran their lives and businesses.

Little by little you will begin to gain their counsel, as you understand their thought processes and how they would react to the opportunities that will be placed before you.

I would personally recommend not having one member of your board influencing more than two areas of your life. So to avoid this dilemma, keep the areas simple, for example… Health, Life/Wisdom, Wealth, and Education. You can go more in depth as your success grows.

Now if you choose to put members on your board who you know personally – question them, gain knowledge from them, but NEVER let them know that they are on your board. Because if you tell them, you may not get the honest information you need to make the right decisions.

The purpose of your personal board of directors will help you grow in the 3 areas that strong leaders possess…Strength Of Action, Strength Of Self Mastery, and Strength Of Relationships.  So embrace this concept and I promise you will begin to see the changes you deserve.

So let’s get back to the question I asked before…would you still follow the class clown if you both work together in corporate America? Could you now see this type of person as a leader? There is no right or wrong answer here. I just want you to take a moment to reflect on the leaders in your life. However, if in your reflections you have someone you are not sure if this person qualifies as a leader, then ask yourself…

What is a leader? Is it a person who tells us what to do, or one who inspires us to do things ourselves? The class clown wants to lead you, but lacks the authority, and does not command the respect they must have to gain it.

We respect true leaders because they DO inspire us to take a stand for ourselves that we reach our goals and take control of our own lives.

True inspiration equals respect. So my challenge to you…form your personal board of directors and write down what inspires you -  YOUR WHY…begin to develop the inspiration that others will follow.

Test Your Priority IQ

Pull up a chair and hear me out: You probably already know that most people think of priorities as something they plan once a year, such as New Year’s resolutions, goals, or when they have started a new business.  Very rarely; however, do most revisit their priorities again, to examine if they are still in alignment with their goals.

Just imagine how your priorities might change as you move forward in your business.  You deserve to reevaluate to ensure you are focusing on the things that bring a positive contribution. Life is like a shopping cart; we all need to pay attention to what we’re filling it up with.  Whether conscious or not, priorities are reflective of what we spend our time on each day.  It’s easy to stay focused on priorities that are not serving you, if you are not constantly evaluating where you are going and if you are still on the path.

What is your shopping cart full of daily?  Is it full of priorities that are moving you closer to or further away from your goals?  Understand that priorities are simply those things you give your focus, time and attention to.  So whether or not you would classify something as a priority, all you really need to do to define your priorities is to pay attention to how and where you spend your time each day. As you’re reflecting on these things right now, this may or may not be a good feeling for you.

Are you beginning to see that you will never grow to a point where you never need priorities?  Successful leaders keep doing this, they keep reevaluating.  It doesn’t matter if they are coaching a team, ministering to a church, or leading a multimillion dollar company.  No matter what it is that you are taking the lead on in your life, you must prioritize; and to really succeed, you must learn to prioritize effectively and regularly.

You can examine the life of any great leader and you will see that they put priorities into ACTION.  Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean that you’re accomplishing something.  Busy, simple, mundane activities will not necessarily create the results you desire.  In fact, most likely they won’t.

Look at your results.  Stop and re-examine, “Am I really where I should be?”  If you want to do a quick check on your priorities, then just look at your results.  Are your results what you desire?  If not, it’s probably time to start emptying out your cart.

Of course, you’ve heard that the best leaders turn the use of effective prioritization to work for them by accomplishing multiple priorities with each activity.  This enables them to increase their focus while reducing the number of actions they take.  Understand that when you are re-examining your priorities you are not necessarily adding more to your plate.  In fact, often times it’s more critical that you see the need to let go of something.  When you do this, you will free up more time and energy to be able to focus on the priorities you’ve decided are worth keeping in your cart.

As leaders, striving for continuous improvement, I’m encouraging you to look within…re-examine your priorities. Here’s a simple way to put this into action today.

Write down a list of what you think are your top 5 priorities; what you think they should be.  Then, for the next week, keep a small notebook or piece of paper on hand to track what you do with each of hour of your day.  At the end of the week, make a list of what your top priorities really were (based on your actions and how your time was spent during the week).  Obviously this will make things clear for you and will help you get a feel for what your real priorities (purposeful or not) are.

Successful leaders have many things in common, one of those being that they focus daily on their goals, and what they do each day (their priorities) reflect that.  What are your priorities reflecting? STOP and think of all the ways you can use planning and executing priorities to get what you want.

Are You a Business Owner or a Top Producer?

You don’t realize it yet, but in the next few minutes, you’re going to learn exactly what you are.

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “I’m not sure…” and I must confess there is no right or wrong answer here. Little by little you will understand that this conversation is not about work ethic or time management; but rather connecting and building relationships with prospects. Not selling them, but leading them with your value and vision.

Let me ask you a personal question…. Are you a leader in business and in life? Are you someone who is first to raise their hand to answer the question, or volunteers before you’re asked? You know what I mean, don’t you?

Then pay close attention!

Of course you have heard the saying “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” Top producers know their business inside and out; they don’t have to spend their time reacting to the changes within their business because they are proactive in the management of it. Prospects see the value in working with this type of leadership and are most likely to form a partnership with a person they perceive as strong and that will provide them with value. Just imagine how your prospects view you.

As you continue to read this article, you will learn a few things you can do to ensure your prospects see you as this type of leader.

Take some time today and review your marketing and your follow up. Prospects can sense things about you whether you’re connecting with them on video or over the phone….

In your marketing, you have about 30 seconds to win a prospect’s trust, and that just gets you to the next step. So really exam how you are coming across to others. Enlist the help of your personal master mind group or one of your mentors to review and give you honest feedback. This will give you a crystal clear picture of how you are really perceived by others.

Do not miss a word of this… people don’t buy what you’re selling, they buy why you’re selling it. You must connect with your prospects. In 3 short minutes on the phone, you will either continue to build on the trust, or your prospect will go elsewhere looking for value. A business owner’s mindset will be, “This is a numbers game” and move on, while a top producer will explain how the value of their vision or mission will benefit the prospect by working together.

If you’re like me you have loyalty to brands, but you have to wonder just how this brand has connected to you. Simply put, the brand loyalty comes from the value you receive from the product or service.

A great example of this is the car company Mercedes Benz. When you enter the dealership, they don’t drop cheesy lines on you, but simply ask….

“Do you know why we build our cars the way we do?”

This question is very powerful and will always receive a positive response. It further builds trust by providing the value the customer is looking for, and even takes the price out of the equation.

Earlier on, I asked you the question, “Are you a business owner or top producer?” Take time and really think about this…. Now remember, I told you there was no right or wrong answer. If after reading this article you have determined that you are a business owner, don’t be discouraged. The only thing that may keep you from becoming the top producer you know you can be is to truly understand “WHY” you are in business in the first place.

Discovering your “WHY”, is crucial and you should be able to sum it up in one quick sentence. You’re “WHY” will be the difference between being a business owner and a top producer!

3 Habits You Must Possess To Be A Successful Entrepreneur

You probably already know this, but 97% of people who start a home business fail. Why is this?

When I started my first home business over 11 years ago, I was told by my mentors, “Do the behavior and habits, and the results will follow.” But for those who are starting out in a brand new home business, it may be unclear to them what habits they should be focusing on. The further and further you read to the end of this article; you will come to realize there are 3 habits you must have in order to achieve the success you desire, and to become the entrepreneur you deserve to be.

What if you had a goal to make a million dollars? I know this may seem out of reach, but this is actually one of the most common monetary goals given by people when they are asked, “How much money do you want to make?” Most people look at this goal as unattainable, foolish and a waste of time. But a successful entrepreneur doesn’t look at the goal like a normal person. While most people look at this as an impossible endeavor, successful entrepreneurs find the simplest, easiest ways to break down and make their goals more attainable.

A great example of this is that Christine and I spent the last two years going to the gym, trying to lose weight and get healthier. But it wasn’t until we sat down with an expert, and broke down our goals, that we realized we were doing it all wrong. Our habits were not serving us. Though we had what we believed to be a very attainable goal – because we didn’t break that goal down, to help us manage the way we achieved it – we ended up not only losing weight, but gaining weight and losing muscle. Now I’m not saying that our health goals and someone’s goal to make a million dollars should be looked at the exact same way, but to some people losing weight and getting healthy is just as important to others who want to make a million dollars.

But the key point here is breaking down your goals. Take your yearly goals and break them down by quarters, then take those quarterly goals and break them down by months, then by weeks, then to days. In which every single day you have five small goals for you to complete on a daily basis. As you complete these small goals, little by little you will begin to see your big goals start to take shape. And you will start to feel better and better about the path you are on.

Do you remember hearing, “Rome wasn’t built in a day?” So why do so many people try to become millionaires overnight? Have you ever noticed people are always trying to solve the world’s problems in one day?

Not too long after we bought our dream house in Corrales, Christine & I decided to extend one end of the patio to the other, as part of our backyard redesign. I consider myself to be a pretty handy person; having grown up on a farm, I know my way around tools. And so I decided that I could handle the concrete work myself. I did all my due diligence, got all my questions answered about how to build my forms, what type of wire to use, how to pitch the pads away from the house so water wouldn’t drain against it. Everything was set to go. The one big mistake I made (and for those of you who have any experience working with concrete understand this), is that I tried to pour every pad at once, and then go back and finish them. In my defense, I was on a time schedule; but in the defense of the concrete, I tried to do it way too fast. In my haste trying to pour the concrete in one day, I ended up with less than perfect looking walk way (but I do have to say for my first time, I guess it’s really not that bad).

The point I’m making is that I tried to do more than I realistically could with the time that I had. This happens to many people, especially those who are new to home business. They have a plan, they execute the plan, and when they can’t get it all done in the time they wanted, frustration sets in and then ultimately burn out. Remember, we all have 24 hours in the day. Whether you’re making $1 an hour, or $100 an hour, the clock will move at the same pace. Building a successful home business is not a sprint…it’s a marathon. As I like to tell my students, “Success is not an event, it’s a process.”

Remember when you were back in high school, if you didn’t do your homework and turn it in, you didn’t make the grade? It’s no different when we “grow up”. When we join the real world as adults, the only difference is instead of having someone looking over our shoulder who wants us to succeed – we have someone looking over our shoulder expecting us to succeed.

I remember when I started my first home business; my partner was one of the best salesmen I had ever met in my life. In fact, I remember expressing concern to my wife about being able to handle all of the business that my partner was going to bring on board. This was a very exciting time in my life. I left my cushy six figure job in the transportation industry, and began to spread my entrepreneur wings. I thought that I had found the perfect partner to build a long lasting, profitable business with. There was only one problem. He didn’t know how to work for himself. When I questioned him about the lack of performance and results, he would often become defensive and offer only excuses. He never once took responsibility for his actions or held himself accountable for the lack of results. My ex-partner was one of those people that thrived for someone else, but faltered without a boss looking over his shoulder. You see, entrepreneurs do the things they must do in order to get the job done. It comes down to personal accountability…the difference between an employee and an entrepreneur is doing the things that must be done without having a boss looking over your shoulder.

As you’ve read each word of this article, you now have an understanding of the 3 habits of successful entrepreneurs, and how they approach their business. It’s not just about setting goals. It’s about breaking those goals down into simple daily habits and executing them. And as you’re thinking about breaking down your own personal goals, understand that achieving them requires time, it requires patience, and above all, it requires persistence.

If you haven’t done so already, stop thinking like an employee and become the entrepreneur you know should be. Find the ways to get closer to achieving your business goals. Make sure you are doing income producing activities on a daily basis, such as talking with prospective customers. Learn from those who have the success you’re looking to achieve. Regardless of your successes or failures, always be the first to stand up and take responsibility for your actions. Always hold yourself accountable for your results.

What is the NEXT STEP?

Some time ago I was working with a client who had an epiphany by learning something so simple.  Sometimes the simplest ideas make a world of difference in our lives.  So in this post, I would like to share with you the knowledge that I transferred to her that day.  Perhaps this could be one of those things that will make a world of difference in your life!

My former client is a small business owner, who, when she first started working with me, was overwhelmed by paper and “to-do’s”.  At times she would feel so inundated that she didn’t know where to begin.  Even after implementing systems to manage filing and follow-up items, she occasionally would suffer from meltdowns.  What was causing such strain for her?

My client was trying to think too much about what eventually had to be done with each of these items (tasks, projects).  She couldn’t see past the big picture to focus on the small steps needed to get there.  It all seemed like so much that just looking at it froze her.

When we discovered that this was the main issue, I suggested to her that when addressing her tasks, projects, and “to-do’s”, to always ask herself, “What is the next step?”  Less than a week after that day I received this message from her:

“I feel so empowered now.  The realization of “What is the next step?” has been key for me.  Everything fell into place once that sunk in.  I have been working on projects and getting things done that have been plaguing me in the back of my mind for weeks and months.  It feels so good to have a bit of control over my attention and space now.  I can’t express to you how amazing it feels to be in that position.”

So how can you apply this simple idea? Here are a couple simple solutions that you can choose to implement part or all of:

1. When addressing a new task, project, or “to-do”, ask yourself:

• “What is the very next step?” And…

• “When will I work on the next step?”

2. Add a reminder to your tickler file or planner about that next step on the specific day you chose to work on the step.  Then when you come to the day you chose (in your tickler file or planner), you will quickly be able to see what the next step is, and you’ll be less likely to be overwhelmed by the size of the project.

Does the way You Spend Your Time Reflect Your Priorities?

Have you ever noticed the day before vacation how you are suddenly clear about what must be done – what the highest priorities are – and you somehow manage to get it all done before you walk out the door?  Your mind is free from concerns about what you might have left behind because you know that you addressed all of the top priorities; whether it was by doing it yourself, handing it off to someone else, by deciding that it was something that really could wait until later, or that it didn’t need to be done at all.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have that kind of clarity all of the time?

How much more would we get done?  How much less stressed would we be?  What if we were so clear about our priorities, both personal and professional, that those were the things we put our energies towards first and foremost?  If we have a limited amount of time in our lives, how are we going to choose to spend it? 

Some time ago I read a book titled, “Chasing Daylight; How My Forthcoming Death Transformed My Life.”  Eugene O’Kelly, the author, learned in late May 2005 that he had terminal brain cancer.  September 10, 2005 he passed away.  During those few months of knowing he was dying, and that there was no escaping it, he not only wrote Chasing Daylight, but he also became very clear about what was most important in his life, and how to achieve great clarity and balance with his priorities in his little time remaining.

In summary, O’Kelly was a high achieving, goal oriented CEO of a 20,000 employee accounting firm.  He felt strongly about commitment to one’s career and found that his display of commitment was reflected by how much time he invested into his work.  However, as he became more clear about the greater balance of life, he realized that commitment is not measured by the time someone is willing to give up, but by the energy one wants to put in, by how present one is.  Some thought provoking realizations he shared were:

• You can’t control time; however, you can control your energy and how it is allocated. 

• You can control how your energy is used to respond to outside influences. 

•  You can do anything if you give your best energy to it…Time becomes less important.

•  Commitment is about Depth. Passion. Effort. Wanting to be in a certain place and not somewhere else.

 O’Kelly realized that what he was really trying to do, rather than be committed, was to be conscious, to pay attention to and focus on his surroundings, to be “here and now”.

With the ‘vacation season’ here, I challenge you to notice, and enjoy those last few moments before walking out the door to leave on vacation… savor them.  Pay attention to what it is you did differently.  How can you incorporate these differences into your daily, or even weekly routine?

My desire for you is that this summer will provide you with some time to relax, a feeling of rejuvenation, and heightened clarity so that you are able to be clearer about allocating your energies to those things most important to you.

What Baseball Can Teach You About Getting Focused, Organized and Productive

Baseball season is upon us, and lately I’ve been thinking about my days of playing ball as a kid. I’ve always said that I learned many valuable lessons from the game, and I still am. Years ago I learned a concept from my dad, my coaches, and all the parents on the sidelines, that can most certainly apply to how we can become more organized, productive and in particular – FOCUSED! Here is what I, and many people who have been at the ballpark, have heard at a typical game:

“OK Chris, just one out at a time!” “Just focus on this one pitch!” “It’s just like we’re playing catch…one throw at a time!”

You might already get the point, but just in case, I’ll go ahead and explain. The whole idea behind these statements (or you might call them “words of encouragement”) was to help keep the players focused. The pitcher who needed to forget about just how critical the next three outs were…she just needed to focus on what her next pitch needed to be. The fielder who needed to focus on what he would do if the ball came to him…where would he need to throw the ball to? The batter who needed to pull off the squeeze play…who just needed to focus on bunting the ball on the ground. Anyone – a ball player or a home business owner – can at some point can get overwhelmed by the big picture. So why not apply some of these simple techniques used every day on the ball field to our work lives?

Here are a couple usable insights that you can apply to your workday.

De-Cluttering your workspace:

Barbara Hemphill, author of the “Taming the Paper Tiger” book series says, “Today’s mail is tomorrow’s pile.” If you don’t have a system for handing what’s coming in today, you will most likely have new piles upon you tomorrow (in addition to any other piles you have).

Here is how you can apply the “one at a time” concept to de-cluttering your workspace. Once you begin sorting through your current items (typically the items on your desk or kitchen counter), make one of 3 Decisions: 1. toss it, 2. take action, 3. file it away if you will need to reference it sometime later. Don’t allow yourself to move on from one paper to another, until you’ve made a decision on the paper in your hand. Many people who I worked with in the past previously would get hung up in this process of filtering through their items. They would grab a stack of papers, start off on a good foot by making a decision on the first piece of paper, but then the next piece of paper they would flip right by to go on to another, and then another, without making decisions on either. This is a quick way to bring on overwhelm, and give up on the process altogether. Remember, just focus on one at a time, make a decision – and then move on to the next item.

Working on a project:

Once again we have another “big picture” item that can cause many people to get overwhelmed and feel paralyzed about taking the steps needed to complete a project. To get clear about where to start on a project, consider doing a brainstorming session by yourself or with a group of people. Consider the individual tasks that will need to be completed to accomplish your objectives with the project. Once you have your tasks identified (and keep in mind, you’ll probably come up with more along the way, which is fine!), use a system, such as a sort-able table (like a Microsoft Word table or Excel spreadsheet), tickler file, or planning software, to keep track of what tasks need to be completed and when. Working on one task at a time, which contribute to your project, can make it far easier to focus than trying to take on the project without breaking it down. The idea here is to minimize unnecessary stress and overwhelm!

When John Gagliardi, today’s most winning coach in college football, was asked about his upcoming football season, he commented that the team couldn’t have an undefeated season unless they won the first game. So they decided to just focus on winning the first game. Seems simple enough, but so are most great ideas. Perhaps you’ll consider focusing on your one ________ at a time to help you become more productive, and to contribute to your success in the game of life.

Is What You Learned In School Hurting Your Business?

You probably know that most people who start a home business, especially a network marketing home business, are very reluctant to talk to their friends about it. Most say, it is the “pitch your friends” issue, but maybe it’s really a fear of being accepted, or even worse feeling judged.

Imagine what it would be like if you could tell your friends and family anything about your business and not be or feel judged. Now we all say we can do this, but is this really the truth? As you read this short article, you may begin to feel a sense of uneasiness. Little by little you will begin to understand that you are afraid of having your business judged by your friends, which can make it feel like you, personally, are being judged.

When we were little kids, judgment was not an issue. In those early years of existence, we would tell anything to anyone, anywhere, without being concerned that we might be judged. So I often ask myself, “What happened?” I don’t recall a magic time in life when one opinion became THE RULE.  And since when if we don’t accept the popular opinion, do we need to feel like we are being negatively judged?

Have you noticed even as adults, the most outspoken person’s opinion is taken most seriously? Let’s remember back before high school, to the moment you first felt judged by your peers. Did your opinion matter any less, and more importantly did you stop expressing it?

The term “popular kids” continues to haunt many adults long after they were perceived to be the “judges” in school.  Like it or not, we were all looking for a “good” judgement from the popular kids. This was especially the truth for the even the popular kids, who often had their own insecurities, which is likely why they passed judgment on others.

Are you beginning to see how this can still be affecting you today? No one likes to be judged for the what they think or do, but it’s time to not care. You will really be interested to know that you can overcome this like anything else, and you will start to feel better about the fact that it does not matter what your friends think about your business.

You will be judged for your business and what you do with it; this will never end. However, rare thinking people like you know that it’s how you feel about yourself and your business that is significant. The only judgment about your business you need to concern yourself with is your customers.

Results..What Are You Focused On?

I woke up with a severe pain in my left shoulder this morning…I could barely move it. The result of a hard workout on Tuesday.

As I inspected my shoulder, I began to think, WOW I have been going to the gym now for a minimum of 4 days a week for nearly three years.

You see prior to that, I really let myself go to H*LL.  I needed to make a
change, fix the damage and get myself back in shape.

I weighed 240 pounds the first day I went to the gym.
Yesterday I weighed myself…are you ready?
255 pounds!

Not the results you were expecting me to say, were they?

It may seem odd to you, but I was not surprised. During the whole time
I have been working out, I have not lost a single pound…NOT ONE!

But I am still accomplishing my goal and getting the results I set out for.

I’ll explain…

My goal: Get Back Into Shape!

My results: I am in the best physical shape I’ve been in for ten years.

Am I smaller?… No
Can I fit in my older clothes?…No
Am I losing weight?…No

But I am slowly but surely losing my unwanted layers of “extra me”,
the best result I could ask for.

So what does this have to do with your business?

Simply put…Don’t get so focused on ONE result, because
frustration can set in when you don’t see it fast enough.

Remember you are getting results, whether it’s placing your first ad or
your first sale. Each day you get results because you show up in your business.

Celebrate these results no matter how small they may seem to you, and the
one big result you’re looking for will appear before you know it.

Avoid The MLM Exile… 2 Tips To Sell Your Products And Build Your Downline

Hey there, welcome back…it’s Matthew Kominiak and today I’m going to give you two very simple MLM strategies that are not only going to increase your products and service sales in your MLM, but it’s also going to seamlessly help you recruit people into your downline.

Now, let’s jump in with both feet here and talk about the first strategy, which is getting more products and services sold in your MLM business.  Let’s face the facts here, no one likes to be sold; yourself included.  Think about it, if somebody comes up to you and says, “Hey, I have this, I want you to buy it,” and it doesn’t fulfill a want or a need, you’re just going to back away and say, “Hey, no thank you.”  This is no different in MLM, when you go to your friends and family and say, “Hey, I’ve got this great product and I think you should buy from me.”

If it doesn’t fit a need, they’re not going to buy it and it’s just going to be frustrating to you.  So let’s side step this MLM business land mine. Let’s figure out how your MLM business can fulfill their wants and needs.

What you NEED to do is get to know your MLM product line…get in there, understand the features and benefits. Start using what you are selling with your MLM business so you can give testimonials and recommendations based on what you know, and not speculation.

This will give social proof to your MLM business, and it is really going help your marketing of your MLM business. That way, when you hear people talking about a problem they have, you can fulfill that need with your product or service your suggesting via a recommendation or a testimonial. You see, people are more likely to buy from you in this type of scenario. There is no selling here, just a solution to the problem, want or need.

Now, here’s where the second part MLM strategy…Building your downline.  As you start to build up a customer base, of people that are buying from you continuously, they start to get passionate about it, and they will begin to recommend to other people, and give their own personal testimonials.  You can move them right into your downline, As they come to you say “Hey, this person would like to buy this, too,” you can just say, “Why don’t you just get involved in the business?  That way you can make money on their purchases.”  Can you say DOWNLINE?!!!

You get them involved, they’re making money because they already have clients coming in wanting to buy the product and service.  You’re making residual income from your downline and that’s the reason why you got involved in MLM in the first place.

7 Key Principles to Effectively Use Twitter to Market Your Business

My wife and I love Twitter.  We think it’s a fantastic avenue that creates new and creative ways to meet new people, and not to mention grow your business.  Unfortunately; Twitter has gotten a bad rep when it comes to people misusing it.  Are there any real rules to Twitter? No.  But there are some sound principles that will help you find and keep more followers if you play by them.  These are just a few of many of our thoughts on this topic, so take what you will, and pass up what you won’t.  It’s just our opinions, as well as many other seasoned Twitterers.

These guidelines are for newbie Twitterers, as well as other Twitterers who just want to become more effective at using Twitter to market their businesses.

1.    Add your photo. Seems obvious – I know.  But I can tell you across the board that Twitterers prefer to follow and chat with those who have a photo.  And not just any photoÖa photo of YOU!  Want to connect with more people? Have more followers? Take a minute to upload a photo of your smiling face. (Be sure it can actually be seen, too.  If it’s too far away, crop it and upload it again.)  Keep in mind that your picture represents who you are.  This will be the first thing potential new followers will see about you.  What first impression do you want to give them? This is the most important question to ask yourself before deciding on what photo to upload.

2.    Write a bio. Want followers? Then make sure you have an engaging bio. People want to know something about you before they go ahead and follow you.  If you’re not comfortable sharing where you are from with the Twitterer world, then share something about who you are, what your hobbies are, etc.  Have fun with this – it doesn’t need to be formal or even grammatically correct.  Don’t be afraid to be daring or even outrageous.  Be yourself. It’s ok to be different on Twitter. In fact you’ll get more followers if you are different!  Others will follow you because you’re interesting to them, or perhaps you share similar interests.

3.    Add an interesting background. It’s the same concept as curb appeal.  This is one more way to show your personality or style, and attract like-minded followers to you.  What first impression do you want other Twitterers to have of you?  Are you fun and spunky?  Are you a traveler?  An outdoors man?  Sports fanatic?  I can tell you, there are Twitter backgrounds for every personality.  A few places you can find 1000′s of backgrounds for free, or to have a custom background created include: http://twitterimage.com; http://twitart.com; and http://twitterbackgrounds.com. Don’t get hung up on this.  Get a background set up now…you can always shop around and change it later to something even more fitting!

4.    Don’t vomit on people. Twitter is not just about sales. Use Twitter to meet people first. One of the most common complaints about Twitterers, from other Twitterers, is feeling like you have nothing to say to them, other than trying to sell them.  Let’s face it, people are tired of being sold all of the time.  There is a reason Twitter is referred to as a social platform – to socialize!  Imagine walking in to your favorite restaurant or bar, and having another patron come up to you, and then blurt out, “Hi, want to make fast cash now? Do it by buying my program now!”  It just doesn’t make sense.  It’s a turn off and you will get more people unfollowing you if you do this – or, another possible outcome is they will just ignore your posts since you’re that ‘annoying sales guy who is vomiting their stuff” on them all the time.

So first things first, use Twitter to meet people, gather a following.  Refer them to your blog so they can get to know you.  Once they’re on your blog, now it would be appropriate to direct them to your ad or sales page.

5.    Use your welcome message to welcome people – not to advertise to them before they even know who you are.  This is a common mistake amongst those using Twitter for business.  Even those who say, “Hey Joe, thanks for following me. Like to put hundreds more in your pocket? Then click here!” This is another instant turn off.  It comes across as unfriendly and self-centered.  Don’t make this mistake.  Thank them for following you.  If you really want to connect with them, check out their profile page, then you can either ask them a question about it or give them a compliment.  Don’t be fake here – be genuine in your giving of kudos or showing curiosity by inquiring about something on their profile page.  Start a conversation, and then you can refer them to your blog so they can get to know you better.  We like to do business with people we know, like and trust, right?  Help them to do this by starting a relationship first.

6.    Use automated tools carefully. If you sound like a robot, for instance when you send out your automated welcome message, this too will turn people off.  Be personable.  Share something about yourself.  And be sure that your message doesn’t exceed the 140 character limit.  It’s obvious you’re using an automated response system when your followers receive a message from you that is cut off.  To be sure it’s not too long, copy and paste what you intend to include in your auto-message first in Twitter as a draft.  It will show you if you have too many characters, and you can cut it back if need be before saving it as an auto-message.

7.   Be sure to thank people for re-tweeting your tweets – how kind of them to share your thoughts or information!  When you thank them, they are more likely to want to get to know you, and may likely continue re-tweeting your tweets.

Signature Box Tips To Get More Clicks

Just imagine…

You can be AT LEAST 150% better than most people who submit articles to article directories just by learning a few ‘signature
box’ tips I’m about to share with you.

Of course, you have heard of the Signature box (or “bio box”) which shows up at the end of an article. The prime real estate where article directories allow you to be promotional, and add links to your sites. After the article is published, it looks like the last paragraph of your article.

(I’m not talking about your author’s profile; signature box is published at the end of EACH article).

So how do the majority of authors do this? Most authors begin with their name and then talk about themselves in third person.  For example:

“Alan Author is an expert in article marketing. He has a plaque suitable for framing. You can visit his site at www……”

Is this Wrong?

Test it and you will find only about 5% of the people who view your article, actually click your link. Just read what I have to say and put it into practice and you’ll see that the percentage of people who click will be 15-30% on average!

What’s the problem?

When your reader gets to the “Alan Author” section…” what’s the first thing that comes to their mind?

- “The article has ended”.

And this is where a large percentage of people will go away.

It hurts, but it’s true…they don’t care about you!

What if you talked about them?  They did not read this article to read about “you”, so you need to talk about THEM, and what can you do for THEM.  A good trick is to not let them realize the article has ended; make your signature box a natural extension of your article.

It already looks like the last paragraph, just don’t make it sound like it is.

Give a strong call to action…

List the BENEFITS they get from you, if they will go ahead and click the link. And, actually, TELL them to click the link. Sounds too forward, but more people want to be told what to do next.  (This has been tested time and time again.)

That is the secret!

Overwhelmed with Twitter? Want to leverage your time? Be more productive?

I remember the first time someone told me that using Twitter and Facebook were a great way to stay in touch with friends, clients and business associates, and to meet new people.  My thought was, “Who has that kind of time?”

Then last year I paid for an online course on how to use Facebook for marketing the business I owned.  After the 4 week course, my practice of what I learned and use of Facebook dwindled.  I lost touch and gave up because it was just too time consuming and I figured wasn’t a top priority with all of my other business demands.

Then recently I was invited to attend a free training on how to automate social media.  Frankly, I didn’t expect to learn much more than before, especially since it was a free class.  I figured I would get duped into buying the one thing that would be required to really make this automation thing work.  So good news for me (and you, too!), what I learned was VERY VALUABLE AND FREE!  No software to purchase, no courses to buy.

So today I’m going to focus on ONE of these tools.  It’s called Social Oomph (http://www.socialoomph.com/).  Social Oomph addresses many issues that we Twitterers have in common:

-          Tweeting throughout the day, even when we’re too busy to add new tweets (create pre-made tweets to send out later)

-          Being able to respond in kind to those following you (create automatic welcome messages…even create multiple different kinds of responses for your followers to automatically rotate)

-          Being sure to follow back those that are following you (auto-follow feature)

-          Being able to unfollow people who unfollow you (another automatic feature)

-          Fitting in everything you want to say, with limited character requirements from Twitter (get more space by using the Shorten URL feature, which is placed conveniently next to where you add your tweets!)

I appreciate that Social Oomph is just ONE PLACE TO GO for multiple functions, versus using multiple different programs to perform these same tasks.  Twitter Deck and Tweet Later have these functions, too, but it’s just easier for me to use one program – Social Oomph, rather than logging in to Twitter Deck and then Tweet Later.

MLM Opportunities – Is MLM Bad For Your Business

Hey it’s Matthew Kominiak here, home business expert here to tell you, STOP IT!

What you’re doing right now, looking at yet another MLM opportunity is the classic definition of insanity.

“You keep doing the same thing expecting different results.”

Now, I know you’ve had struggles with MLM in the past and jumping ship to another opportunity is not going to be the answer.  You need to know that your struggles, they are not your fault.

The MLM business model is broken. But the industry doesn’t want to tell you this because this is the easiest way for MLM products to market.  MLM wants you to buy into a low cost MLM opportunity and buy/sell their product.  This is why they use MLM to market. MLM companies are not here to make you successful, they’re not here to teach you how to market the business, all they want to do is sell their product.

I want you to have the same success as I have. But I’m not going to tell you not to join an MLM Opportunity. If you want, continue down the MLM path, pitching friends and family, rah-rah meetings, hotel meetings, and having strangers come into your home to sell them…knock yourself out!

Imagine what it will be like to make a serious income from home.  The only way to do this is to have a serious business model.  The facts are the MLM business foundation is built on sand. You will never have complete control of your business.

This is a true story about how I started my day….

I’ve been a home business owner for over 11 years now.  And it’s days like today when I am truly greatful for the fact I’m an entrepreneur.  For those who have been to my blog or websites, you may have noticed in my videos I have a pueblo style home.  While it’s not unusual here in Corrales, New Mexico, to have a pueblo style home – but this type of home has a flat roof, that can be a handful.

My brain turned on about 5 am that morning and for once, I decided to fight it.  The clouds from the storm that blew in the night before had kept the morning unusually dark.  I had worked late the night before, so I figured I could take an hour for myself.

I did manage to fight it until I saw daylight begin to peer though the window, and could not stay in bed any longer.  After getting up, I made my way toward the kitchen.  As I passed through the vestibule, I felt something graze my arm.  I looked over my shoulder to see what the pale morning light would reveal, but to my surprise was there was no explanation to what I had felt.  So I looked directly up – just in time to be hit by 3 drops of water!

Knowing the coffee was going to have to wait, I did an about face back to the bedroom.

Remember, I did not want to get out of bed, much less climb a ladder in the morning twilight to fix a leaking roof, but I had to.  Sure, I could get a bucket and let it leak while waiting for a repair service to come, but I would risk major damage by not handling the situation right then.

Now, you may be thinking, “Matthew, fixing a leaky roof has what to do with my home business?”  I want you to think about what I just told you…

I didn’t want to fix my roof, I had to.

How much do you really want to change your life?  Imagine what your new life will look like when you have achieved success with your home business.  Do you want what you see?  Are you willing to work for it?

Just think how much we could accomplish if we channeled that type of focus into your personal and business lives when our backs are not against the wall.

What does this have to do with your home business?

If you WANT TO have a successful business, you HAVE TO do the work.  We all have that little distraction thrown at us called life.  You will do in life what you want to, but things you really want, your going have to work for.

P.S. – I’m sure that as my neighbors drove by this morning, some thought “Poor Matthew”.  Others may have let out a chuckle “Better Him Then Me”.  I just watched as they all started their daily grind.  Soaked by the rain, I could not help but smile.  In five minutes I would be done.  I would be down the ladder, inside having a cup of coffee with my wife…living life on my terms!

Why…Because I want to.

My 1st Daily Goal Is Not To Cut Myself Shaving.

Sounds kind of funny doesn’t it.  But it is true.  I have a chin that is prone to me nicking it when I shave.  I don’t know why, but I will say I have not done a lot of chin research to figure this issue out.  I just deal with the goal of not cutting myself shaving every morning.  I would say I’m more focused during those five seconds of shaving my chin than the rest of the 23 hours 59 minutes and 55 seconds of my day.  Alright I’m stretching this a little,  but  I  really have to  focus in on what I’m doing or my chin looks like it was hit with a bunch of spit wads.

 So what does this have to do with business?  Well everything. This is Goal Setting 101.  Realistic goals are essential to the overall plan.  If your daily goals are unrealistic, how do you honestly expect to reach the end goal?  I’m not saying you should not make goals, but if your goal is to  make $25,000.00 in the next thirty days with your home business and you are only going to work your business 30 minutes a day, you have a major goal disconnect there.  The only business plan this type of goal is good for is trying to win the lottery and the end result is just about as successful.  Be true to yourself, but also be realistic.  You can build a very successful online home business by working a few hours a day, but you need to have self discipline. 

One of the best things I ever trained myself to do is write down my daily goals the night before.  I have a dry eraser board I write my goals on, you have seen it in one of my videos.  When I am done with a goal, I get up and draw a line through it.  We all know how good it feels to complete a goal.

It is important for you to know 2 things: 

1. I don’t list shaving (Just Kidding) but seriously, I don’t.
2. None of these goals are the end all be all of my business.

My day to day goals are the fundamental tasks that MUST be done in order to meet the mid & long-term goals.   I like to call my daily goals my “Money Making Goals”.  All these daily goals give you the ability to build your business and keep taking it to the next level. 

What goals should you be setting?  Well most people start “Part Time” with their home business and a good rule of thumb is to plan goals based on the time you are going to allocate to your business.  So first, decide how long you’re going to work on your business each day (FYI-30 Minutes to an hour isn’t going to cut it) by planning your time at the week level.  Take your time and take six hours off, this is going to be for the weekend.  Take the remaining hours and divide by 5 for your daily business time, and if you only have 1 hour per day then your need to add at least thirty minutes (an extra hour would be better).  Now take your 6 weekend hours and split them up as your schedule allows. 

OK, we have our daily time allowance set up, now we need to focus on what you’re going to be doing.  You want to try for a good daily balance of tasks so you will not be focused on just one goal.  In the beginning, though, you need to spend more time on marketing.  For each day, schedule some time for each goal you need out of the allotted time.  Write down the goal and the times you are going to spend on them.  If you’re not sure on how long it is going to take, its best to give more time and adjust as needed.  Think of it as soup, just season to taste.  The highest priorities are on top and to give you some variety, don’t just keep copying the same goals every day.  The point of this is to keep you moving to your end goal, success and financial freedom.

Remember, when you’re beginning any venture in business or in life, it will always be the daily goals that will accomplish the end goal.  Focus on these and your success will come.  I spend every morning fighting the good fight, but I don’t always win.  This was the case this morning and the inspiration for this post, so I will leave you will this last thought:

A Review Of The Flip Ultra HD Camera (Price 179.99 to 199.00)

I first heard about this camera about 2 months ago.  I was talking to one of my mentors about video marketing for my online business.  I had been using a Sony for my video marketing but I could not get the quality videos I was after. With video marketing becoming a very viable way (and inexpensive) way to market, especially with companies like Traffic Geyser, it was time to upgrade to HD

I did my online research and I must admit I didn’t focus directly on the Flip Ultra HD, I needed something small to shoot in my home office.  I wanted good quality as there are many HD computer monitors being used.  At first, I was going to buy online but I needed instant gratification.  I when to a local store and paid 179.00 for the video camera and went with the model 2120.  This model has the largest hard drive, and even though my average video marketing clip is about 3 minutes each, I want to know I had some room to store them.

As for the Flip HD, it is very user friendly and has controls for those who are mechanically declined.  With the exception of the on/off button, they are all located in the middle back of the Flip HD.  The record button is the largest on the camera, there is a 1.5 x 1.5 screen to view your marketing video as you record and to review it before you download.  I have to say I do miss the fold around screen on my old camera.  This would let sneak a peek as I was recording to make sure I was centered and nothing distraction was in the video as well. 

I am VERY surprised at the sound quality of the camera’s microphone.  There is not an external microphone jack, which concerned me as I film in my home office that can echo, as well as outside where I have a waterfall.  Once again, the camera performed beyond my expectations.

The video camera itself is about the size of a cell phone and it is all inclusive.  There is no software to install.  The Flip HD plug in to a USB port on your computer and installs the video edition software direct for the camera.  This works great for the shorter internet marketing videos I do.  I will capture 3-5 on the camera and upload them to my computer all at once.  When you upload your marketing videos, you will have the option to delete them from the camera as you download them.  The USB connection folds into the side of the camera when not in use.  This feature help keep the cables to a minimum.

I did have one glitch with the hard drive on my camera; I somehow got a three minute marketing video stuck on the hard drive.  At first, I was not very happy about this.  But I always try to look at the best side of things, and in this case, I got to work with customer service and support.  This was all done over the internet, and usually I cringe at the thought of submitting a help ticket.  You know the “We will get back to you by morning” disclaimer/ email you get.

Well I’m happy to say not only did they get back to me the same day, when we exhausted every idea to fix the issue they ask me to send them the unit so they could pull the video off and reset the drive.  It was hard to type the no thanks email with my jaw on the key board. Normally you have to beg a company to honor their warranty.

Here is the bottom line; the Flip HD Ultra is a GREAT Value.  Good Quality HD marketing videos with good sound.  If you’re just beginning or have swum a few laps in the pool, I would HIGHLY suggest this tool in your marketing war chest.

The New Google Part II: Making Google Happy!

In my experience with Google, I have come to realize one of life’s true ironies:  You’re going to love this, when you advertise on Google, you are advertising on a system designed to give its users what they want right now.  OK – Here is the irony, as an advertiser on Google you must be EXTREMELY PATIENT!

Google will give you traffic on their time.  Even if you’re relevant, it is going to test you next to other advertisers and who ever makes them the most money and can be relevant to the users intent wins. 

Take this on face value and it may not seem difficult, but add reality in to the mix and that is a completely new ball game.  You have to remember when your ad is clicked you pay money, so you may find it hard to NOT make changes.  You want to put that copy writing class to work so you jump in and start making changes.  Well Google does not like quick change so my advice is…

 DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING. 

You need to relax; change is not necessarily the answer to your problems.  The fact of the matter is you have no idea if your ad is working yet, so you’re going to have to stomach the clicks and let it run.  This is why not everyone advertises online.  It’s hard!  You MUST not exceed your ad budget to test ads as this will kick you out of the game FAST and BROKE!

Split testing will help you gain perspective on you advertising. 

Split testing is using different ads out that convey the same message.  You can then track which ad is giving you the result you want.  One you hit on a winner, money, but unfortunately, split testing is only the beginning.  Now the whole purpose of the ad is to entice users to click on them and visit your site.  If you have an ad that reads:

Make 100K Today

New Business Launch

Limited Space

And your sight has limited relevance to the ad; you will risk the famed Google slap.  It does not matter if you’re in content or search on Google, relevance is the law.  Your ad must match the content of your sight.  Using the sample from above the, if your site doesn’t have match the ads pitch – Slap.

Now this get’s even better.  As I mentioned in part one you are trying to read the mind of your prospect.  This is at least this is human to human.  Enter Stage right:  The Ad Bot.

You have what is basically a robot programmed by a few do determine if your message is relevant to the masses.  This is like playing Texas hold’em without the little ESPN™ camera. 

The ad bots will skim your site for relevant content to the ad you posted.  Now we know that people can and will interoperate things in different ways, and you WILL as I did, build your advertising around this theory.  You build a site and run an ad to drive traffic to it based on what you think other humans would think.

The New Google Part I:Google Doesn’t Like Me!

So you think Google doesn’t like you, well don’t feel bad Google doesn’t seem to like anyone right now.  With the recent launch of Bing, Google is on a rampage, cracking down on both I what I believe sensible things and things even I don’t understand.  You see I work with some of the top internet marketers in the county, and we are pulling our hair.  It doesn’t make any sense, what was the norm is now taboo.  We have sat down tried to see the pattern here and every time we though we had a grip on the situation we were mistaken.  It appears that relevancy is the new rule as Google is cleaning house to provide a better search experience for the user. 

But…

If that was the end of it, online marketers move forward with some direction.  It is random campaign slapping (when Google stops traffic to your campaign) that is making it hard to plan our next move.  It’s a fact we could never predict Google before, but it is the random targeting of slaps on campaigns and the sparing of those that are similar that has online marketers wanting to through our computers out the window.

To bring this into perspective for those who are not yet using Google, so let me pull you in to my world.  Now lets say you have have similar themed campaigns running on Google.  For this example we’ll use a franchise business opportunity as one of them; next, you will have a 19.95 business E-book Affiliate program, and finally an internet business opportunity.  You should see the theme here, if not it’s business.  Here is where things get well let’s just say interesting just in case your kids read this, Google may shut 1 or 2 of these campaigns down (Slap), but leave the third.  Why you ask, well if I had that answer I would sell it for a million dollars a pop and two million on Saturdays.  If you have been online marketing in last two to three months, you’re no doubt at your wits end.  So the question of the day is: 

OK Google – What do you want?

When your marketing online, your constant goal is to get as close to the readers intent at the time they are thinking it, yes I know it’s about as close to mind reading as you will ever get.  Now a new challenge has revealed itself.  In addition to the mind reading, you now have a very cranky advertising venue you have to pacify as well.  You will find yourself asking why I continue to do this. 

Simply put – Google is STILL the best on marketing venue on the planet!

So instead of trying to figure out what is going to make Google mad next, let’s focus on what will keep Google happy.

“Life Is A Performance; Not A Rehearsal”

It is estimated that 70,000 people will start a home business today, and 56,000 or 80% those people will be out of business tomorrow.  Of the remaining 11,000 only about 1,900 will achieve their business goals.  So of the original 70,000 startups, only about 3 percent will be able to take it to the next level.  I realize those numbers are disappointing, but those are the facts. If starting a business were easy, we would all be business owners.  Now don’t think that the 80% didn’t have the dreams, goals, or a desire to be successful, but something was holding them back.

When you are daring to envision a different life, your biggest obstacle is YOU.  Until you can get out of you own way you will only be a spectator in business. We often speak of those who do and don’t, but what is to become of that lost 13 percent of budding entrepreneurs?

This is really the forgotten group or as I like to refer to them to as the diamonds in the rough.  These people fly along under the radar putting in hours, forging the plan, attending the seminars, and buying the books. I my years of mentoring I have worked with and helped many people just like this.  They are stuck in the planning phase trying to become an expert everything, but accomplishing nothing.  Eventually they get so overwhelmed they collapse into the dreaded paralysis by analysis.

It is very difficult to reach and maintain success if you never get out of the planning stage.  The best advice I can give you is to put your ideas out on center stage.  Without doing this, what are you really hoping to accomplish?  Let’s face it some Ideas are bad, and the only way you will know this is to put it out there for others to view.  If your ads are not attracting customers then something is wrong.  Look, no matter how much you plan around a bad Idea, it is still going to be a bad idea.  The longer you work with it the more wind it will take out of your ‘sales’. (Pun intended.)

I can give you a firsthand example of this when I recently had one of the country’s leading authorities on online marketing review my ads, video’s, and landing pages.  Now before asked him to look this over, everyone who I had preview my marketing prior to him, loved it.  So I was riding high.

Now for reality…

I don’t think the expert looked at my marketing for more than 5 seconds before he told me it was all crap.

Now you might think this was rude, but this was exactly what I needed.  Though my marketing was attracting potential customers, they were not buying and this was not providing me with the return on investment that I wanted.  When it was explained, what I was doing wrong, I went back and implemented the suggestions and this really saved me time and money as I was able to make my marketing better.  This all happened because I put it out there, and sought the advice of those who knew what was not going to work.  Remember you will not be an expert on anything until you work at it long enough and very few people make a CEO income by planning.

In closing, if you are one of the 9100 standing just off stage, this my challenge to you…

So you think you’re going to start a business and make a six figure income?

Time Management = Rational Use of Time

When was the last time you heard someone (or perhaps yourself) say, “I just don’t have enough time!” or “I have too much on my plate.” If you haven’t heard it lately, there’s a good chance you’ve seen it in one way or another.

Think about the people you see rushing in their cars to or from work.  How about at the occasional frantic shopper at the grocery store, the toe-tapping customer filling their gas at the gas station, or even the parent that appears to be in complete chaos at little league games?  The sad truth is, we’re living in a society that requires more rational use of time than ever before.  Well, rather than getting down on ourselves for any moment of time that we’re not maximizing the use of, why don’t we figure out how to get better at being more rational with it…and perhaps even easing up about doing as much as possible all at once?

The Disorganization-Quick-Fix Myth

Do you know of anyone who felt so disorganized and chaotic that they thought going to a time management seminar would fix all of their organizing problems?  The wonderful output of seminars is that they get people motivated and moving with concepts and ideas they can implement immediately.  So a person participates in a time management seminar, receives some great ideas that are easy to implement, and a month later is still in the same situation they were in before they went to the seminar.  Why is that?

Many courses offer mechanical techniques and gadgets, such as special planners or software, to help you temporarily get things in order.  A few days or weeks after the course, people often revert to their old habits and the chaos returns.  I believe changing behavior and habits is much more important than mechanical processes and gadgets if you want to stay organized. A good rule of thumb:  If you’re not already organized before buying a new gadget or physical tool to help you get organized, you will not suddenly become organized once you get the tool.  It’s like buying a piano and expecting to play like Mozart the next day.  It’s not very realistic.

So let’s get back to the question above regarding why the seminar didn’t work out to be a quick fix.  Most likely time management wasn’t the only issue this person was dealing with.  Did you know there are six (6) issues that can cause disorganization and chaos? If this person is not just dealing with rational use of time as an issue, it’s extremely important that they identify if other issues could be the source of the problem.

Six Issues that Cause Disorganization

We’ve already talked about the first issue: Rational Use of Time.  Here are some other issues:

• Handling Incoming Items (such as paper, e-mail, voicev mail, verbal requests from others, and your own thoughts)
• Project Management
• Personality Issues
• Psychological Issues
• Prioritization

The best way I can describe how these other issues may affect your life is by sharing with you the following imaginative story:

This morning when you walked out to your car to head out for the day, you noticed that you had four flat tires, you were out of gas, and your ignition wouldn’t turn over.  What are the odds that you were going to be able to use that car today to get where you were going?  Not very good, right?

But because you’re handy, you were able to fix the four flat tires.  So now what are your odds of going somewhere in that car today?  You’re getting closer, but you still aren’t going anywhere (you still have a problem with your ignition and you’re out of gas).

The same concept applies to getting organized.  You may be doing great in some of the areas listed above.  Perhaps you have a reliable system for managing projects and your personality is aligned perfectly with the responsibilities of your job.  However, if you’re struggling in some of those other areas, you may still find yourself putting great effort into handling the other areas that can cause disorganization.
